I'm not an American. However your ignorance is quite obviously no better than what you yourself criticize here.

The film is based on true events, yes. It's not the actual step by step exact way things went down however, and in fact that would be perhaps impossible to even reconstruct. Obviously the writers/director did over do a few parts without a well written set up, a few scenes are a little weak and unbelievable for sure. Nonetheless, much of it is done quite well and the overall point made by this film is a very good one; One that many forget can actually happen to real people, from anywhere! Your inability to relate to this only shows that you have never studied much about Nazi Germany or the like, because in truth, the Nazi's used much of the same kind of techniques to achieve their domination over the German people. This kind of thing doesn't happen only in America, it's a human issue, not an American one. Similar kinds of manipulation have happened all across the globe. You're obviously just too prejudice to see this obvious reality. Sure, it's easy to make fun of the American justice system, however there isn't one on the planet that gets even nearly everything right. So that too is just nonsensical thinking.

I'm wondering which highly-developed country the OP is from.

I know the Americans get wound up by this and will start going on about Nazi's etc, and how they are the land of the free etc, but I did think "this could only happen in America".
