SPOILER: Realize what happened to the baby?

Hey, you guys know what happened to the baby, right?

They took the mom and the baby deep into the radiated wasteland, where Banderas himself was having grave difficulties due to radiation sickness.

The baby is less than a week old. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what happened to him!

After being directly exposed to intense radiation setting off Geiger counters, the baby almost certainly would have died of radiation poisoning within 72 hours of the exposure.

Probably and the rest of humanity also lost due to desert being wider and wider... The point of the movie is that humanity is going extint and robots are the next step.

as in one book ive read,the planet was deserted,with extinct civilization and with only robot left that told the story to the visitors of planet....

Was it the book City by Clifford Simak? That book had a similar theme with the only things left on the Earth were robots and intelligent dogs.

Oh. I haven't read much Silverberg. In fact I think I've only read a couple stories by him. I can't recall reading any of his novels.

You missed a important moment during the movie. We can assume the wife and baby took the radiation pills everyone else took except Baneras. Banderas went into the wastelands last minute without taking the pill.s

Remember when the boss was taken out to the wasteland And they all took those pills? They were radiation pills. No reason to believe the wife and baby didn't also get to use them.

Good luck getting the baby to swallow the pills without choking to death. Additionally the enforcers were going to kill them anyway so I don't think they'd bother with the pills. The wife literally had no clue what was going on.

Radiation pills are only designed to protect your thyroid from absorbing radioactive isotopes, those wouldn't really be the problem of someone going into an old area with lots of radiation.... they weren't at risk of any thyroid issues because they would have died long before that happened from radiation that would have destroyed their digestive tract and of course bone marrow, but digestive tract getting whacked would have killed them way before the loss of bone marrow would have done much to them... would have insured they had a very painful death.

Banderas was sick due to lack of food and water, and the fact that he'd just consumed half a bottle of whiskey. Radiation sickness is just a small part of it... Also, driving briefly through the area, as the baby did, would do much damage. Like driving through Tjernobyl :)

I believe statement is made that the radiation is worse deeper into the desert/other side of the chasm--so bad that man can't enter. Would assume that's why they were trying to prevent robots from crossing over.
