Bad acting or bad direction?

I like Chloe Moretz as an actress, but her Carrie role was terrible! Everything felt forced, unnatural, overacted. Even just walking down the halls, she was a caricature of a shy, introverted, self-conscious outsider. Anyone agree?

reply

I thought she did well using her hands in orgasmic movements.

reply

I'm not really sure what that means?????

reply

I felt she was extremely good as Carrie. If you didn't like her performance i'm not sure what to say, based on Kimberly's (the directors) past films I don't think it would be the direction though. However as I said I thought she was excellent as Carrie, so I can only guess as to why you didn't like it.

It means that EightofourPM is an idiot. You are just fine. I disagree about Carrie. I enjoyed it. Even if I don't like something I have no reason to be hateful and trash anyone. If I don't like a movie or a performance, it doesn't anger me. What is your take on that?

reply

I thought her acting was good, but I think I'm just so used to the fact that she's not like that at all in real life, and she was also Hit-Girl, so it's kind of hard to see her being so shy and introverted. Even though she was bullied in Kick-Ass 2, she wasn't socially awkward, she would talk back to the bullies in that movie.

reply

Realistically that beans she wasn't convincing enough Then.

When you're 17 a cow can seem dangerous and forbidden...am I alone here?

reply

Yep, I agree. The original Carrie was classic, and Sissy Spacek was at turns awkward and terrifying. I didn't hate this remake, though. It just didn't feel natural, and even the relationship between Carrie and her mom seemed rushed and stilted.

reply

Yeah, I didn't buy it in a lot of the scenes. Although to me, she was more like how Carrie looked in the book more than the other two portrayals.. and her personality was a bit more like the book Carrie. But as for her acting... for me, she was at her best during the shower period scene, and the scenes right up to the closet scene.

Carrie in the book is described as chunky, very pale and pimply faced. So you either didn't read the book or you have serious reading comprehension problems!!

Like the film itself, Chloe was uneven. There were times I really loved her performance and times where I thought she just missed. For example, (I hate to compare but it's the best way to say this.) Sissy Spacek was able to express a lot of darkness with the line, "I'm going Momma. And I don't wanna talk about it anymore." Chloe didn't. She delivers the line very straight and naive, and doesn't express the layers of meaning that it had.

Maybe I'm biased toward actors in general, but I thought Chloe was the perfect physical choice for the part. However, it's hard for a fifteen-year-old to play a part like Carrie White without a lot of help. Spacek was 26. She had been through the territory of early adolescence before. She had a map. Chloe is in the middle of the territory, probably not lost but not familiar with it yet.

I tend to think it was Kimberly Pierce who didn't understand this and didn't give attention to it, because she makes other lapses in the movie. I'd love to see Chloe play the part again when she's 26 or even 22. Unfortunately, that will never happen, but I'm certain she'll hit it out of the park if she does.

reply

I would have liked to have seen Chloe play Chris. I think she can pull off being mean.

reply

Agreed! Who would you've picked to play Carrie?

reply

I don't know. She's physically smaller than I would picture Chris, and looks almost pristinely innocent. One thing thing that made her good as Hit Girl was the contrast between her appearance-stature and her character's skills-bloodthirstiness. Which, BTW, was why she was also great as Abby in Let Me In. With a part like Chris, where it's important to see the character's cruelty right away, and surprises are unnecessary, that really wouldn't work.

Maybe in a few years? I wouldn't doubt it.

reply

Some people are able to look at more than a persons stature in getting to know a character...

reply

Okay, you don't cast Amanda Seyfried as a nerdy, high school, wallflower, and give her a pair of glasses to make it convincing. Yeah, as a high schooler, I'd never go on a date with her. You don't cast Denise Richards as a physics professor with a funny name. I don't suppose you'd get through a film where Scarlett Johansson plays the part of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. So I'm thinking your flexibility about physical types has its limits.

I don't know why you're giving me criticism about this. My favorite film, the original Carrie, had Sissy Spacek, who didn't fit the part physically at all. She first convinced Brian De Palma to cast her, and like most directors, he had a particular physical type in mind. And this remake took all the previous visualizations of the supporting characters and reversed them. Sue is blonde, Chris is brunette etc. I'm surprised Chloe gave such a great performance in this part.

reply

I had forgotten Spacek was so old! That's very true, she could bring a level of reflection and understanding to the role. Also, I doubt Chloe had much of an awkward or unpopular stage in high school. She probably doesn't even go to high school, if she ever did.

reply

Shailene Woodley as Carrie.

reply

She's too pretty, don't you think?

reply

Carrie could be pretty. You could do the ugly duckling routine with her, in fact, that's what they should have done with Chloe. The important thing, though, is she doesn't groom or take care of herself at the start, and she dresses only in the ugly "chaste" dresses her Mom allows her to. So, of course looks awful at the start.

A serious oversight by the director is that Chloe seems to get no help from the makeup and costuming departments. Right after the shower scene, the worst thing that ever happened to Carrie, she's dressed neatly and her hair is blow-dried. I don't know if it was in Chloe's contract, or if Kimberly Pierce was asleep for the costuming trial. Maybe Hollywood just can't make stars look awful anymore.

reply

Good point. Aside from her ugly clothing, she was always perfectly coiffed!

reply

Not only was Spacek 26, but had been prom queen at her high school.

Chloe is tutored. Officially, she hasn't graduated high school yet.

reply

Interesting thoughts.

reply

"I'm going Momma. And I don't wanna talk about it anymore." Sissy was AMAZING with that line..So creepy. Chloe was, on the other hand...Awful delivery.

reply

I never really thought Chloe Moretz was that great of an actress. I don't think she's horrible but if you ask me, she's over-hyped.

Be the type of person you want to meet

reply

She's way over hyped.

reply

Yeah. I don't mind her but there are other actresses in Hollywood that emote better than she does, I think.

It feels good to be lost in the right direction. 🌌

reply

I very much agree.. In quite a few movies she's been terrible, in my opinion.

Carrie, Dark Shadows to name a few.

Loved her in Kick-Ass though..

Be the change you want to see in the world.

reply

I will always think she was absolutely phenomenal in both kick ass movies. She's been good in other films, but I'll always feel like she peaked at Hit Girl tbh

reply

chloe moretz is a great actress.
so i guess that answers your question.

reply

I think your mistaking your lust for her as fine acting or something...no way can she be called "great"

reply

I absolutely agree with you. It was painful to watch, since I like her as well. But I think the entire cast was bad. Julianne Moore was a caricature too. Even the small roles felt artificial and forced. I would say it has to be a problem of poor direction more than anything.

reply

This whole movie seemed like everyone just walked through it like all they cared about was getting paid and being famous. The directing was horrendous and the new things they added were just plain stupid. Brain De Palma couldn't of saved the movie if he used Chloe too.

reply

English 101. You should of paid more attention. Oh, I mean "should have", idiot.
Not to mention that awkward opening sentence.

But then, you know everything about everything, so who cares, right?

reply

That's right dumbass.

So,on with your mission, whatever that is.
