I agree, I like this better than the original. Now I don't want to take anything away from the original, Brian De Palma wanted to make a great horror film and he did that. But Kimberly Peirce wanted to tell a tragedy, with a bit of horror in it and that to me is where this succeeds. The De Palma did make changes to the novel that I liked, so it didn't bother me that they made it into this movie in fact I feel they were handled better. I do feel the character were better fleshed out, I though Carrie and Margaret's relationship was both heartfelt and disturbing, Sue and Chris were better developed and their motivations better explained. The bullying is better handled, the original only had the shower scene and the blood dump.
It's not perfect either, the rock song at the end was unnecessary and there were more scenes from the book filmed that were cut which is a shame they could've made this look less of a remake and more the re-adaptation it was intended to be. But I do think this is an overall better adaptation and better film as a whole.
