Was waiting for the Eighth Psychopath to reveal himself, lol!

We don't value the lives of animals over humans, per se. But in film there are conventions, & one of them has been a reluctance to show violence inflicted on animals (if you want to see an excellent satire on this attitude, check out De Niro in "What Just Happened?"). I think this is due in part from the actual violence inflicted by filmmakers back in the day, before the ASPCA started monitoring the treatment of animals used in film, an increasing awareness of conservationism in terms of all species, & finally a sense that while a great deal of conflict & violence stem from situations humans knowingly put themselves into, animals are usually innocent bystanders without agency like civilians in a war zone.

I think, too, in this particular film it added to the dark comedy that a psychopath such as Harrelson played was willing to kill so many people to get his beloved shih tzu back.

All that said, I think there's been a bit of a cinematic backlash of late, perhaps stemming from that ridiculous canine escape in Independence Day. It seems as though in horror & suspense movies, at least, dogs have taken over the role of the luckless schmuck who gets wasted by the monster/demon/ghost in the first reel in order to show the protagonists that there's some serious business looming.

reply

I think you nailed it when you said "back in the day" animals WERE hurt and/or killed, but the actors - as we all know - weren't. I'm glad that's stopped. It's not that their lives in the movies are any more or less valuable, but we don't want to go back to killing animals because it's easier than training them.

reply

because people can really suck - no one likes to see innocent children, elderly or disabled people or animals hurt.

when driving in rush hour traffic or shopping during the holidays, it is much easier to see why i'd rather see a person shot

reply

Exactly.

^LOL

Back when I had a Facebook account, I was a regular visitor of a local pet 'Lost and Found' page. The admin. of the page announced to everyone that a family that had rescued a dog had backed out at the last minute, and that the dog was placed somewhere that was known to put animals to sleep pretty quickly after taking them in. The comments on that Facebook page were ridiculous! One person suggested that the family be put down along with the dog. Another person said that there was a special place in hell for the people that gave the dog up. I replied saying that maybe the family realized they couldn't afford the dog, or that there was another reason why they couldn't take it. I also said that the people saying such harsh things about the family are disgusting. But my opinion on the matter was unpopular and people continued to gripe. It's really quite silly.

I would murder 100 puppies if it meant saving the life of a person. But fortunately for those puppies, a scenario like that is too unrealistic to happen. But if it DID happen, those puppies would be screwed.

Now kittens on the other hand, well, the person whose life is at risk would have to agree to have sex with me or give me money or something for me to kill 100 kittens.

Also, I really should say that it depends on who the person is. I might be willing to save a murderer or rapist if they truly changed for the better. But only in the puppy scenario. In the kitten one, I will automatically kill the person. I imagine it would be hard to figure out if the person truly changed for the better, though. Hopefully whoever it is that forced me into this whole mess (I assume they have a gun on me or are holding someone I love hostage or whatever) would give me enough time to research the person and their crime. I might even hire a private investigator if it is allowed.

Seven Psychopaths was a good movie.

Maybe if they make a sequel to Seven Psychopaths, you could be one of them that is featured

I would hope he would be the first one to go. Have him/her star in a real life Cujo movie.

The dog is just gorgeous why would you want to do any harm to that dog? what are you a psychopath? I'd throw the rabbit into a wood chipper if it crapped on the rug but that dog is just adorable!

You just answered your own question. Are Humans not animals? We are. And the worst of the as we are the only ones capable and carrying out the destruction of our own planet. Humans are a virus and the Earth our host. Has a dog ever murdered someone over a pair of shoes?

hey, hey hey, careful, man, there's a beverage here!

Spoken like a person who actually uses their brain that_dude_madison.. If only people would have a lot more sense and actually just see the facts that you mentioned. "Why do we value an animals life over a human?".. one of the dumbest questions anyone can ask. To the person who asked the question, Close your mouth and open up your brain. Easier said than done I guess.

Because humans are *beep* and do horrible things, and animals do not

"I just thought if you invited me over, you knew it was me showing up"

Lol animals don't kill or rape other animals? Looks like someone needs to do some research.

reply

Humans kill humans. Animals kill animals. But humans post videos of animals killing animals on YouTube. At least animals don't do that.

I personally believe that you should get to kill any animal you want for whatever reason you want. Unless, of course, the animal is cute, in which case you should have to have a reason to kill it.

reply

Non-human animals also haven't been responsible for the Westboro Baptist Church and TMZ. So there's certainly a moral difference.

reply

Exactly. Will never understand how it can be so *beep* hard for PEOPLE to understand that. There's way more humans on the earth than there are functioning brains.. that's for sure.

Humans are over rated in real life. Animals or pets in particular are innocent and don't do violence for violence sake or greed.

People are fvcking idiots too. There are those with their mental instabilities that watch movies and can't separate fantasy from reality and would have no problem feeling okay or justified in killing or being cruel to an animal. There's all ready too many of those types around ... animal shelters are full enough of victims from low life humans. There was a poster at an animal shelter I used to volunteer at stating that people who abuse animals often are violent or abusive toward children.

Our sick society does not need even the slightest encouragement that such is okay.

I love dark and twisted humor, but as an animal lover I was so relieved the little shih tzu was not shot.

It did show at least one dead bunny in the house where they burned the Zodiac hippy.

It's also humorous that these tough violent guys were so soft inside toward animals. This is not the typical MO of serial killing psychopaths in real life. People who abuse animals also tend to abuse people and children. It is known also that in some cases (Dahmer for one) tortured and mutilated animals before escalating to humans.

The dog being shot in the head or the bunnies being brutally killed would not have added to the movie and it would had been so pointless with no comedic value, even on the dark/twisted spectrum.

The answer to this question is the same one that lead the director of the original Italian Job (you know, the good one), to "kill" the Aston Martin and the E-Type Jag during the Mafia standoff, rather than one of the characters. And to do it slowly, with a digger, so we could tell it was real (although a stand-in Lancia was used for the "going over the cliff scene", because the first time, done with the actual Aston, didn't come out right).

Because it is a movie and the audience will know that a character's death is fake, but a beautiful car destroyed, on film, is devastating in a way that the director would LIKE to get the audience to react.

Animals were treated like cars back in the day, and carelessly maimed and injured during cowboys and indians charges. So, now we are only left with cars to actually damage in movies (kind of like how these days it isn't cool to dislike anyone for gender, religious or racial differences, but it is OK to if they are really, really fat).

Thank you, thebe123-484-488327 . Glad to see some actual thinking going on- on this board. Its the human ego that makes one think they are not an animal & that they are better than any other living thing. "why do we value an animals life over a humans?". Might sound ignorant or arrogant to some but, anyone who really ask that question followed by "i would've just shot the dog & bunny" is in my mind, a real psychopath. People like you only think about yourself & don't give a d*mn about any of species on the planet. Like someone else said in a previous post, wild animals don't go around ruining the world, humans do. Plain & *beep* simple. Don't you know how to use your brain? ... Rhetorical question, don't answer that.
