Will it suck hard?

If yes how hard?

Even the very few decent Batman movies kinda sucked so I'd say that the odds are in favor of it sucking pretty badly. The only Batman movie that lacked some stupid, goofy shit was Mask of the Phantasm. Even the two good Batman movies (BB, and TDK) had dumb shit in them. It's a sad state of affairs for what should be the most badass franchise.

I would sincerely love to be wrong.

Care to share what dumb shit you're referring to? As far as films about orphaned vigilantes who dress in rubber bat suits to fight crime go I thought those two movies (and the final chapter, for that matter) were believable and convincing. I really felt they were the first superhero movies that could conceivably take place in the real world without suspending all disbelief. I'd be interested to hear about what you found stupid about those movies.

Well, to begin, let restate that BB and TDK are decent movies. I liked them (TDKR is utter shit though). The problems in these two movies were not bad enough to make me dislike them but I have to acknowledge that they just couldn't resist being corny in some misplaced homage to the (what some consider source material) Adam West show.

BB:
1. When they were stealing Dr Strange's origin and he was in the mountains training, there is a troop of ninjas who are all expertly choreographed for specific posturing during his specific presence. It was like the absurd henchmen from the West days but dark ... and they were ninjas.
2. Water evaporation plot doesn't evaporate water from human bodies. Like skin is a better buffer than the metal pipes.
3. Poison does whatever the writer wants. Totally inconsistent.

TDK:
1. The beginning heist is loaded with Tim Burton-esque foolishness. Like Joker walking around in makeup in plain sight until he then put the clown mask on. The bus breaks out of a wall and no one thinks that is suspicious? There's also a perfect open space for it right at that exact moment. This is Skyfall level dumb.
2. Cell phone bat-radar.
3. Batmobil crashes through wall of a parking structure multiple stories high. SMFH!
4. Lots of timing issues like complaint above. How could the Joker know the bomb timer was just enough to only save one of them, how does Batman know when and where people are with no possible means, etc (happens alot in this movie)
5. Guy got a gun into the courtroom?

BOTH: They ruined the fight scenes with close-ups and quick-cuts. Bale trained hard in a special technique designed for the movie. You'd never know. Watch the-making-of to see him fight a bunch of guys at the same time. It is better than any fight scene in the films. What a waste. This isn't a "goofy" complaint but I had to add it since Nolan really blew this part.

I liked the movies but ... you asked.

reply

No, that's an awesome and detailed reply, thanks for taking the time to respond.

While you might have a point about those plot conveniences and inconsistencies, personally I have to say I didn't spend time thinking about any of them to the point that they annoyed me. I know where you're coming from, I can sometimes be just as irritated by minor incomprehensible plot devices, it's just that for me I was so entertained by Nolan's trilogy that I was perhaps more willing to just go with it.

One thing that surprised me though was how you saw certain parts as a homage to the camp of the West-era Batman. For me it seemed that Nolan did everything he could to steer away from the kitsch aspect of 60s (and early 90s) Batman. I though it wore it's intention to be a darker, more serious take on the Batman story clearly on its sleeve, like Nolan was making a deliberate point that this was no retro, florescent-Schumacher-mess type affair.

reply

I respect Nolan's effort toward a serious Batman and he succeeded for the most part. I, too, was mostly able to just go with it on his first two. More good than bad. It was his serious approach that made those little dumb things stick out. Everything is going smoothly and BOINK, Batmobil comes out of the sky somehow. With so much competent attention payed to a good, dark tone, I can't help but think that the little dumb parts are intentional. Thus an attempt to hearken to the "its just a comic book" crowd who think of the West show as more authentic source material than the comic book in its more adult era.

In the end, there's just 3 Batman movies I like. Also the Affleck fight scenes are the best even though in wretched films.

I agree with this a thousand percent, and gift you with the Winner of the Internet Trophy for the nonce. Congrats!
