Smirnoff a premium vodka?

The show is obviously sponsored by Smirnoff but calling it premium is a long stretch.

Just an FYI:

In a blind taste test of 21 vodkas conducted by the NYT, Smirnoff was voted the best-tasting vodka by a wide margin. This is the SECOND taste test in which I've seen Smirnoff run away with the first prize for taste (I'm trying to remember where I read the other test a few years back, because I was surprised).

Interestingly, the "trendy" vodka brand Grey Goose which is cited by most American's as their so-called "favorite" vodka, didn't even make the Top 10! Of course, when you ASK someone they're going to cite a brand that costs more than other brands, even if when they don't know what they're drinking they actually end up preferring the cheaper Smirnoff!

Edited to add a link to the NYT taste test:

Grey Goose was marketed to yuppies to think they were drinking a premium brand and it has a higher number of impurities than Smirnoff and a higher odor as well.

I was drinking with a Russian stripper one time and she wanted to do a shot. I assumed that she would go for the top shelf stuff and asked if she wanted Grey Goose but she no.

She walked over to the bartender and pointed to a lower shelf bottle. The bartender brought the shots over and she said "you don't want dat, you want dis"
We did the shot and she had her eyes shut, slowly turned to me as she opened her eyes and said "Now dats gud wudka"
True story.

Are you from the New York area? I heard a lot of the New York strippers are Russians and Brazilians.

Not even close. There's Russian strippers all over the country

reply

The Russian American population is reported to be 3.13 million. The New York City metropolitan area continues to be by far the leading metropolitan gateway for Russian immigrants legally admitted into the United States.

reply

Very true. Historically the New York metro has always been a popular settling ground for immigrants.
I grew up in Connecticut and in those days the main immigrants were from Puerto Rico.

Back when I was in College, Smirnoff and Relska were the bottom rung of vodka, and were usually the cheapest crap that you could buy in pint size or liters.

A pint was around $1.89 back then. We each got our own pints, and a bottle of Schnapps to mix into the Smirnoff to take the hard edge off the turpentine flavor.

Jon Taffer got excited about Budweiser last night. I seriously think Anheuser-Busch might be a new sponsor.

reply

Context: They were in St. Louis, MO. If they were in Golden, CO he'd have been saying the same thing about Coors. In St. Louis, Budweiser is king.

reply

I know that Budweiser is king in St. Louis, but Taffer laid it on very thick.

I remember a few episodes in Milwaukee. Did he say anything about Miller Beer?

reply

I'm sure AB paid the show, either outright or in-kind, for being featured.

reply

I don't think he has ever mentioned Coors or Miller like was mentioning Budweiser on the last episode.

reply

I've had Smirnoff and I tried their new juice infused vodka and I can tell you that Smirnoff is hangover city. Not premium by any stretch.
I tried Skyy vodka recently and it's far superior.

reply

I use to be a heavy drinker. I could drink any liquor straight or mixed. Cheap stuff, good stuff, I know my liquor and yes Smirnoff is the olny alchol that gave me like a 3 day hangover. I thought I was going to die.

I don't let anyone hot-comb out my HAIRitage!

reply

It's so easy to make out all of the bottles that are turned around.

And in last night's episode all of the Budweiser boxes in the back room had black tape over the name, making them stand out even more.
