I enjoyed Game Change and it certainly provided an interesting insight into the 2008 election.
I do wonder, however, how realistic the portray of Sarah Palin reall ways.
For example, is there any source for the propositions that:
1. Palin thought Saddam Hussein was responsible for 9/11, 2. Palin believed the Queen was the Head of Government in the UK, and 3. Palin did not know what `the Fed' meant?
In the movie these are just gigantic plot holes because no campaign ever would keep someone on a ticket if it were true! If it is true and Wallace and Schmidt say everything in the movie is fact or represents fact they are the worst people to ever be in politics in how they couldn't resign immediately from the campaign and tell the press how stupid palin was!
1.- If it was untrue, they would be liable. Yet no lawsuits from either Palin or McCain. 2.- No VP pick has been replaced as far as I know. To do so would unravel the campaign and brand McCain as reckless and not worthy of trust. 3.- It was too late at that point. They had to go to war with the pick they had, not they wish they had.
1 & 3 agree on 2, mcgovern replaced mo sen tom eagleton w/ schriver in 72 - so, it has happened. eagleton had received psychiatric treatments and electroshock, i believe, but didnt tell the campaign beforehand. kind of like palin not telling the mccain people beforehand that she was dumb as a rock.
i'm sure they knew they didnt have a prayer, and just went with the their shot, keeping her up in the attic as much as possible
in a world where everyone has an opinion on everything, you get a lot of bad opinions - me
Regarding #1, she had allegedly mentioned to her son, who was stationed in Iraq, that he was going to fight Al Queda. So someone might have overheard the casual remark, passed it on to the authors of Game change, and it made its way to the public as “she thinks Sadam caused 9/11”
I would imagine the others are similar: incidents kinda blown out of proportion in the movie. I think, in real life, she knew what the Fed is, but she didn’t know exactly what they do specifically. So someone twisted her ignorance about what the Fed does to say, “She doesn’t even know what the Fed is.” Likewise, I think she probably asked jokingly, “why don’t we talk to the Queen to get Britain’s help with Iraq.” And someone exagerrated to say, “she thinks the Queen runs the country.” That’s the sort of exaggeration I think occurred
Some people like Nicole Wallace said the movie and book are accurate. But she had a falling out with Palin, and she ended up switching her party affiliation from Republican to Democrat: Wallace is one of the most left-wing news anchors today
I used to wonder if Nicole would go back to being a Republican if things went back to normal. I think if she did that she would lose her sweet spot at MSNBC. There's nothing people like more than an apostate from the other side.
