I'm not even looking for likeable characters in horror movies, you've got other genres for that. I was just asking for your personal favorites :)

I forgot to add Green Inferno!
And the Korean zombie flick Train To Busan is worth mentioning :)

Have a thrilling new year everyone!

Is that to me? I wasnt telling you to look for likeable characters. I was giving my reaction to the films you listed that I watched. IMO likeable = rooting for someone. I didn't care what happened to the 4 characters.

Green Inferno isn't a 2016 movie, so if you're expanding the question to include best horrors watched this year I'll say Hard Candy which I rewatched last night. Thriller rather than horror, but a deeply disturbing movie.

edit to add I thought The Autopsy of Jane Doe was pretty good.

Speaking of inferno, I watch Ron Howard's Inferno (2016) last night. Good thriller/drama, and some seriously unnerving hallucination scenes in the beginning. Fun movie, except for some ghastly shaky cam.

In the Deep > the shallows
