Bank robber who doesn't spend robbed money?

I think this is the first movie about a bank robber who spends his own money to finance his robberies and he does not even spend the robbed money to cover his expenses. Seriously, who wrote this stuff?

I agree. They were straining to make him seem more redeemable to the viewer. He’s basically stealing for the thrills only? Even if that’s case, he would have spent a few thousands on vacations or something over the years
