Deaf Community Members Protest Hearing Actor Playing Deaf Character on 'The Stand': "Enough Is Enough"

what?
shareActing is dead
shareTell any of these “communities” upset that a character like them is being played by someone not like them to piss off!
It’s called acting dickwads, and any type of person should be able to play any type of character!
Getting so sick of this shit! Time to fight back and tell people where to shove it!
The deaf community apparently didn't watch the show.
The Nick Andros character, in Episode 3, is able to hear and speak.
If a real deaf person was cast, how would they hear and speak as required in Episode 3?

2 I made this point some time back on this thread.

Are you sure about that? I was under the impression he never spoke at all in this miniseries. I'm not going to watch it again, and you're quite possibly right; that could have been one of the many times my mind wandered in boredom.

For those who are interested, here is an interview with Marlee Matlin, herself deaf, on casting deaf characters.
It doesn't directly address the situation with casting Nick but I thought it was interesting.

Who cares? Actors are supposed to pretend for a living. We ourselves should pretend we can’t hear the deaf community complain for attention. For all we know it’s a perfectly-hearing liberal doing the complaining anyway, while the deafs couldn’t care less.
