Just Saw It -- No Spoilers

I just returned home from seeing it, and have to say it was much, much better than I expected it to be. I've watched just about every MCU film on its Thursday opening night, but almost decided to forego doing so this time. I'm glad I didn't. What I feared might be Marvel's first dud is a really good movie. It's not my favorite Marvel film, but it's definitely entertaining and well-paced.

It keeps the audience guessing, and almost all of the turns the plot takes were unexpected. The villains are excellent, and the ending was powerful. The CGI seemed below par when compared to Marvel's other films, though it wasn't DC-level bad. Just a little uneven.

My big takeaway from the movie? For a nation as advanced and sophisticated as Wakanda, one has to question their method of choosing a leader. People complain about the American electoral college system, but man... Then again, in hindsight, it would have been a pretty fun election night if Trump and Hillary went at it atop a waterfall, armed with spears, so maybe the Wakandans are on to something.

To have some context, you think that The Force Awakens is better than the movies from the original Star Wars trilogy, according to your own message:

At first I was going to tell you to get a life, but I've changed my mind.

Better to rethink your entire life, if that's your response to a review.

And here we have the usual troll...

I definitely enjoyed The Force Awakens, and while I have trouble with the whole "this movie ranks higher than that" list-making, when I examine each film in the Star Wars canon, it is certainly the 2nd or 3rd best of the bunch. If my enjoyment of that film is in some way relevant to my enjoyment of Black Panther, so be it.

First dud? Thor 2, Iron Man 3, Avengers 2!

reply

I wouldn't characterize any of those as duds, especially not Avengers 2 which was quite good. Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 are probably my least favorite of the MCU films, but neither was a bad film. I was somewhat worried that I'd leave the theater after Black Panther having hated it, and feeling the way I did after the recent Super-Man films. I worried similarly before Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man, but Marvel has yet again delivered.

I liked Avengers 2. Thor 2 had a lot of problems, but it can still be an entertaining watch when ti comes to certain scenes or character interactions (mainly Thor and Loki).

reply

Agreed. As I mention above, I have issues with the whole ranking of films, as sometimes certain aspects of a film are better than those of another, but then in other ways the film may not be as good. That said, I'd group the 18 MCU films into five broad categories of quality, and Black Panther definitely falls into the "2nd best" group. Where it ranks within that group I can't say, but it's definitely as good or better than most of the other MCU films, which is saying a lot, as they've made 18 movies and none has been bad.

I agree about Iron Man 3 (too many people putting on the armor and, more or less, becoming 'Iron Man'), but I thought Avengers 2 was slightly better than the first one; and Thor 2 was quite good, a nice companion piece with Thor 3 since they contrast in tone.

Iron Man 3 is certainly my least favorite, but it isn't a bad film by any stretch. Likewise Thor 2, which works fine within the trilogy. It's more that Marvel's films have been so uniformly good that even the least favorite are still quite good.

One of my most anticipated films this year. It expectedly lived up to the hype. You make a point about the CGI, albeit I mostly noticed it around the final scenes in the mountains. Though by and large the film is exquisitely crafted, wonderfully scored (ugh, those hip hop tracks worked so well), unpredictable, effortlessly funny, true to life in many ways, and visually majestic. What’s more, this has some of the best standout performances and villains in an MCU feature. So without question, Black Panther is a unique film that’s in my book up there with Marvel’s finest and any great comic book film. Dare I say... masterpiece level?

Now as far as MCU duds go, the consensus is that Iron Man 2/probably 3 (divisive), The Incredible Hulk, The Dark World and Age of Ultron are some of the weakest in Marvel’s overall impressive output. For me, The Dark World is flawed and somewhat lifeless but still solid. IM2 & The Incredible Hulk, while they’re my least favorites, are watchable. Age of Ultron has always been one of my favorites, so I disagree with the majority of opinions regarding that sequel.

Anyhow, if some of Marvel’s recent movies haven’t been great or some of their best to you, there is no denying Marvel has been winning over critics and audiences alike for a while. Black Panther? It’s proving to be a beast!

Marvel's first dud?

You are funny and ignorant at the same time. Keep it up.
