Jackman, Weaver? What were they thinking?

I'll have to think twice before deciding to watch either these two actors movies again. Life's too short. Chappie is indeed Crappie.

Couldn't agree more! What a terrible movie.

reply

Have to agree, cant quite put my finger on why it was so bad but bad it was. However the effects and scenery were good, had a real district nine feel to it but just didn't live up to it. As for the so called "stars" I wouldn't be putting this one on my CV!

reply

Still don't get you people. This movie was entertaining as hell. Definitely better than the new Avengers bore-fest and Jurassic World that all the critics were creaming over, or something like AVATAR that everyone hyped the crap out of but is really just a crap CG Pocahontas.

Lesson learned.

Hopefully. As long as the lesson you learned is that you should probably stay away from obscure/cultish/foreign films that exist outside the little box containing your comfort zone. . I agree.

wigger robot.

With logic this goofy, you make it so easy to understand the hate. You should have been a comedian, larosat. . .

Three of the most disturbing, disgusting, ugly, whining, annoying protagonists in a movie.

You are so adorable, buddy. Would you like an emoticon? Here ya go champ.😅

Ps. You cannot say anything about Die Antwoord they haven't already said about themselves. Do some research before you go putting your foot in your mouth, and please don't catch dysentery from the poop that stuck to your shoe while tracking through, and agreeing with, some of the poopiest non arguments this board has to offer.

It was quite good. Perhaps they don't like South Africans?

> Still don't get you people. This movie was entertaining as hell.

Why, there are many, many movies out there that are really bad, but still entertaining. This one was really bad, but it had lots of explosions and chase scenes and gun play for those people who are easily entertained and don't care about logic or common sense.

So... all you got out of this was the action? And you think you're the intelligent one?

You know, I watched this movie on July 31 and, for the life of me, I cannot remember a single thing about this movie other than lots of explosions and gun play. And, frankly, if I can't remember anything about a movie three months after seeing it, it's a loser.

> And you think you're the intelligent one?

I am sorry. How many awards did this thing win? You know, Academy Awards, People's Choice, Kid's Choice, things like that.

Oh, so you need awards to decide whether a film is intelligent. Validation from external parties or groups of people. Can't make up your own mind.

I'm just gonna throw in a few concept the movie brought up: defending the weak, giving a newborn a safe and happy life, not judging criminals by their appearance, and more obviously - given that in the real world we are building human looking robots - the everlasting question: will we ever build an AI that feels, and if we do, are we responsible to it like a parent?

But... all you got was gunplay. Good for you man. Good for you. Did you get the same feel out of Full Metal Jacket? A cool dumb movie with explosions and stuff?

Amen!! Couldn't agree with you more. How can people come away from this, not feeling entertained.

I love deep and meaningful movies as much as I like to just sit back occasionally and be completely and utterly entertained! 'Chappie' did EXACTLY that for me!!

I have to say, in my humble opinion, it'd be almost impossible to top 'District 9' as that movie took me to a level/place, I'd never been before and that makes it difficult to see further work by the same director and not base your judgement with the aforementioned in mind. However, 'Chappie' stood it's own ground, in its own right and it's for that reason, I found it both entertaining, funny and enjoyable!!

I found the inclusion of Ninja and Yo-Landi Visser of the band Die Antwoord, an incredibly adventurous inclusion that, in my mind, paid off. I did find their band branding repetitive, as for me, I was pleasantly surprised at how good their acting ability was and it spoke volumes on its own.

It's made for people like you, I suppose..;) The fact remains, however, that the movie was terrible - on too many levels, to even entertain.

Doomsday (2008), Turbo Kid (2015) are two movies - of similar genre - one big, one small, both with an identity. Chappie doesn't have an identity... The robot failed, as well. You're trying to give it a face, but it doesn't have one. It's -just- chit, all the way. =)

I'm sure they could give less that a damn.

Chappie is indeed Crappie.

LOL. I keep seeing this. . .you are not original in the least. . .and Chappie has nothing to do with fish.

reply

What were they thinking?

Probably didn't read the script before they signed on. Just heard it was the guy who did D9 and got excited. Like most people, they'd probably forgotten Elysium ever happened.

reply

So every actor should play an academy award winning movie?

Besides that, Crappies movies are making tons of money. And you *beep* about 2 good actors and movies in 1 sentence?

reply

I think you missed the part where it says it cost $49 mil to make and took in $31 mil at the box office. In general, a movie needs to take in twice what it cost to make to just break even (remember movie house takes percentage of the ticket sales and advertising - newspaper listings - also cost money).

reply

It took in $31 mil at the American box office, yes, but $102 mil globally (src: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=chappie.htm)

So it broke even and then some.

reply

The Numbers are reporting $105 Worldwide + $8.7 US video sales (here in France it sells very well but can't find any numbers for Europe).

reply

Yeah dude cause of course only the American market counts, it's not like every movie stands a chance to make much, much more money in the worldwide market

Congrats on the solid logic

By the way to be noted that Chappie grossed only $100m globally and the $49m is production budget, which doesn't include marketing budget, so it probably did lose money in the end

Still, you can't only count the domestic market to make an argument like this dude, where the hell do you live, in the 70s?

reply

Oh, so only movies that make money are worth a damn? Good to know, I'll be sure to watch all the Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller movies. I bet I'll have a great time with those then.

reply

Yeah I agree. I'm only part way through and it's appallingly scripted, directed and acted. Looks like a student production.

Yup. Awful *beep* film from start to end in almost every way except the graphics and cinematography. A shallow, vapid, nonsense verse of a film. Every character (inc chappie) is unlikable, boring and two dimensional, the plot (sorry what plot?) and the script are just embarrassing/non existent, and while I had no problem with the SA accents in District 9 (a great film), here they just grated and added insult to injury on top of a weak execution of a so-so concept.

One of the worst semi-mainstream/med-high budget films I've seen in a long time.

I fear for the aliens film with this guy in charge.

reply

Agreed. I let myself get so angry when watching ridiculous flicks, when really I should get angry at myself for continuing to watch it once I realize how ridiculous it is (about 15 minutes in). Awkward, plagiarized, unoriginal, nonsensical, unintelligent roll of film. I wasted 2 or so hours - poor HJ, how much time did he waste? Did someone blackmail him into starring in that chunkyfroth?!
