Audience Screening Summary

Went to an audience screening last night (probably another 200 people there). Was two hours, so will have a little bit of a trim before release, and due to a number of f-bombs will probably get an NC-17 rating I guess.

Really enjoyed it, although the description here doesn't really do it justice. It's not really an adventure-esq treasure hunting movie as described. It's a drama/thriller with dry humor thrown into the mix. Think American Hustle/Big Short/Wolf of Wall Street in terms of the positioning and themes. 80's cars, shoulder-pads, Wall-street excesses, AMAZING soundtrack.

Not sure what protocol is here, have tried to not give too much away, but you can guess where the story goes if you've seen those 3 movies and the below spoiler tag just gives you a bit more steer on the plot.

It's really a ripping yarn "based on true events" of a mining company lead by McConaughey who make what they think is the largest gold discovery in Indonesia and what happens next as everyone tries to get a piece of the action. Then it turns out that someone has been tampering with the rock samples and the whole thing was is a fraud, billions of dollars has been spent and millions in cash is missing.

The pics on here of McConaughey are great as much like Christian Bale in American Hustle, must have put on a load of weight for this part. He really is the star of the movie, puts in a cracking performance. I can imagine it's being released in December with an Oscar nomination in mind for him and you can totally see him getting at least a nomination as he really throws himself into the part of this smoking, hustling, drinking, proud miner wanting his piece of the 80's American Dream. Corey Stoll is excellent and Bryce Dallas Howard plays the long-suffering wife/girlfriend.

All in all, great fun. If you liked those 3 movies, you'll like this. Happy to answer any questions.

Did the rest of the audience seem to enjoy it? How is edgar ramirez as well?

reply

Yes, everyone else seemed to enjoy it. My buddy loved it, he's a huge music fan so got a real kick out of the soundtrack. Some tracks might change, but Steven Gegen was in attendance last night and I heard him complementing some guy on my way out over the current audio.

Film felt like it was in pretty good shape already. It's not SFX heavy, so there were no placeholders. Had a wonderful flat color wash to the shots to really give it that 80's feel. I think they'll likely do some work on the sequencing and introduce the FBI earlier or even at the start of the movie to better frame the timelines and bulk of the movie as him recounting the story to them The start was a little bit flabby and didn't pull you into their world quick enough. I'd also wager that they'll change the title as well before it goes wide.

Edgar Ramirez was good - didn't feel like they explored his character as much as McConaughey's character though, but a great supporting actor.

Hey OP I'm sending you a PM.

I don't speak whatever.

The cut that was shown was most linear, a couple of jumps, but gut instinct is that they'll address this after the feedback from last night as you get no real sense of the total time period and it might better framed by bringing a couple of FBI Interview sequences up to the front as this better lays out the rest of the story, as like you say, a flashback.

Nothing I really disliked. I think they'll likely trim a few scenes and bring up some of scenes to better start the thing as its a little slow. Soundtrack - there were two Joy Division tracks and bunch more songs that I recognized, but couldn't name.

FWIW I'd give it a 7 or 8 but that's a bit subjective. As I mentioned, if you like Big Short, Wolf of Wall Street, American Hustle, you'll like this.

Not really for me - it's all about McConaghy.

Dallas Howard's part is similar to J Law in American Hustle. Obviously not totally comparing like with like, but Lawrence puts in a better turn IMHO.

It really isn't all that helpful. Personally, I loved Wolf of Wall Street while the other 2 are mediocre at best.

reply

Anything from Adam McKay that doesn't star Will Ferrell is mediocre.

So, is this more of a comedy-drama and not like Treasure Of Sierra Madre?

Want three steaks?... My mistake. Four steaks. 

reply

it's based on real historical events from the 1990's, and i don't believe there are any comedic elements to this tale.

no thought, no reflection, no analysis, no control, no intention, let it settle itself.

reply

I just got thrown by the Wolf Of Wall Street and Big Short comparisons. I expected McConaughey to break the fourth wall ala Leo and Ryan.

reply

I saw it as well a few months ago. No it's nothing like Treasure of Sierra Madre. More like a dramedy. It's a serious movie but told in a fairly lighthearted manner. McConaughey is excellent. Rameriz is great as well, Bryce is good too in a supporting role. I've read about the real story and scandal, this movie takes a lot of liberties with the actual events but I doubt very many people ever heard of it.

it rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again

reply

Darn, I was hoping it'd be a good treasure hunt yarn.

What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.

How good was Toby Kebbell in this? and how big is his role?

Did you mean an R rating? NC-17 is mostly reserved for films with explicit sex scenes (think "Showgirls") or extreme violence.

reply

Just got back from a test screening myself. There were actually 2 showings at the same theatre - a 7pm and a 7:30pm. They are definitely testing out a couple different versions!

I enjoyed it quite a bit as well.

It'll be "R" rated. Lots of F bombs, McConaughey nude butt scene and plenty of underwear shots too, lol. You sorta see a sex scene, you look at them starting to go at it then it pans to a window reflection of them but you don't really see much. No female nipples in this one although a hot tub scene got real close!

Music was great, really blended in well with the story/scenes.

Actors were all good and I loved McConaughey's performance. May have been a little over the top sometimes but pretty much fit with the character. I'd only been thinking of him as that weird Lincoln car commercial guy lol but yeah, he's good in this.

At my screening, Kebbel's first interrogation scene popped up about 1/2 way through I think? Seemed a bit odd at first like, wait...whaaaa? Ohhh, I get it...we're flashing forward! I agree maybe having those scenes start in the beginning would be better.

reply

How big is Ramirez part?

reply

He has a huge role, second only to McConaughey.

reply

Think McConaughey has oscar chances?

reply

Pretty good chance I think, definitely a nomination at least!

I actually don't mind that. That's a given for these type of films, like Leo in Wolf Of Wall Street and Gosling in The Big Short.

reply

His looks also made it seem to me over the top at times.

He kinda looks like Tom Cruise did in Tropic Thunder lol, at least that's what I kept thinking of. McConaughey put on a lot of weight, had a huge gut! He had some messed up teeth as well. Not too bad but makes him look more goofy.

Bryce Dallas Howard also put on a good amount of weight, at least from when I saw her last in Jurassic World. She is thick in this movie!

reply

Well, she was either pregnant at the time or just gave birth when filming.

Bryce has gained a lot of weight and, in the process, become something of a feminist heroine. She isn't thin but she's still beautiful. And the roles she and Matthew are playing in Gold, a working class couple having money problems, the couple would more probably be overweight than thin and well-toned. More realistic. Probably living off junk food.

reply

Funny you mentions all the 80's references. Bre-X was in the mid 90's if memory serves.

reply

NC-17? HIGHLY doubt it. Movies don't get an NC-17 for language. Probably an R rating.

reply

There are some twitter reactions up to the screening at the DGA yesterday. Very positive, particularly for McConaughey.
