American Hustle was a fantastic movie! I loved every part of it, the story, the acting, casting, writing, etc. And more importantly it made me a new fan of Christian Bale and David O Russell. Isn't that one of the goals of a big movie with an all star cast? (At least for the studios anyway) To draw in people who wouldn't have otherwise been interested? I was very happy to see Amy Adams show some depth instead of her usual character. Jennifer Lawrence, though cliche (and maybe even stereotypical) was very entertaining. The characters were strong and memorable. The movie invokes emotion (another goal of a good movie). Laughter, concern, frustration, stress, sorrow and the whole nine. How can anybody not like it?
I kind of avoided it when it first came out. But I saw it was going to be on Starz so sat down and watched it. I'm kicking myself for not watching it in the theater. It's fun, quirky and I love the story and the dynamic between all the characters.
Yeah seriously? I don't understand the hate.. I loved it.. It has got everything betrayal, revenge, love, lust, intense, sublime performance by the acting crew, flawless screenplay & direction...
This is my first time ever posting on IMDB but my obsession with film just won't let me hold back. Tatanisha, I couldn't agree with you more. I honestly think people who don't get it are frustrating because this movie is incredible (and only gets better with each viewing). And the emotions. ... you're so right. The casting was perfect. I saw someone wrote Amy Adams was weak. Say huh? She played that part perfectly. When she screams in the bathroom stall, I just love it! Also, the scene with Amy and Jennifer in another bathroom scene where Jennifer says "maybe all we have in life are *beep* up poisonous choices" and then kisses her (like the crazy unhinged person she is).... well that is the start of the BEEGEES song (so not like me to love a BeeGees song) and it just gets me all choked up. Maybe it has to do with me, but this woman understands those women for some reason. When Christian Bale's character is just sliding down the wall watching everyone he loves, admires, fears and despises all around him making huge mistakes, my heart breaks. Irving, strangely enough, was my favorite character. I thought Christian played that to perfection. I am officially obsessed with Christian Bale now. Ever since American Psycho, I've admired him but over the years his performances have shown his character commitment and it's mind boggling. Now all I want to do is rewatch his movies over and over.
Me too! Ijust loved Christian Bale's character. How can you feel sympathy for a low life con artist? I don't know but that's what makes the acting so great
Sorry but I'm ALL excited to connect with people that love it too.
What about Louis CK in that nerdy role? He and Bradley Cooper had some great scenes together. I love it when Bradley plays a kind of dumb guy. He was on a few episodes of the show Nip Tuck and he played a dumb guy who coasted on his looks. He was so funny and right away I could see he was playing a super confident dumb ass in the opening scene and I was like YES.
There wasn't a weak link in the whole movie.
PLUS THE DE NIRO CAMEO! LOVED IT.
I could talk about it forever.

"I'm coming down there to beat your ass and then you're gonna tell me the rest of that ice fishing story!"
Me too, I don't get all the negative user reviews. I scrolled through them and was sorta shocked that there was hardly anyone that had one good thing to say about this movie. I thought this movie was a total blast. Seeing those actors portray such characters was a real hoot. I went into the movie thinking i would see a serious crime drama but was delighted with the overall humor of the film. I think many people were confused on what kind of movie they were supposed to be watching. Is this movie a comedy? Is it a drama? For me, it was the mix of both drama and comedy that made American Hustle a very unique and satisfying movie.
I liked it, but didn't love it. I thought the acting was good. The pacing was kinda frenetic. I know that's what they were shooting for, but left me little time to bond with the characters.
I just saw the movie today and I have to agree. I knew a lot of people said it was overrated but I tried to keep an open mind going into it. But when the words "Some of this actually happened" popped up at the very beginning, not sure why but I just started laughing, and enjoyed the movie all the way through. I loved everyone's performances, esp. Christian Bale and Jennifer Lawrence.
The movie was not good. End of. The plot was crap, the characters weren't believable, the dialogue was embarrassing. I didn't care about any of the characters. Amy Adams, who usually is a good actress, was painful to watch. I don't understand the hype about this crappy movie at all
Think this sums up the main weakness of the film [and there were plenty] not a single character you could feel any empathy for, could quite happily have placed them all together in one room and nuked it to be honest.
The Cooper and Lawrence characters in particular were nothing short of caricatures, possibly surpassed only by Louis C.K. as FBI head Stoddard Thorsen, all in all a major disappointment for a film that was so highly regarded.
Totally agree. I didn't feel for any of the characters (perhaps for the exception of Jeremy Renner and his family) and felt they were not played as real people, but rather caricatures. This resulted in scenes that didn't feel real and, as an audience member, I could not believe what was happening on screen. Therefore, I simply did not care.
Im surprised some people are syaing they didnt feel a connection to the characters. From my perspective each character had a tragic element which you could sympathize with. Irwin - the small game hustler trapped into making a deal with the FBI to save his own skin. He is also trapped by his wife because of his love for his child. His wife, who seems so ditzy throughout, actually breaks down later and reveals that all she wants is for her husband to love her. I loved how Jennifer Lawrence played this role. Brilliant and hilarious. The detective is trying to escape his life of mediocrity and poverty - he also has a fiancee (probably arranged) who he is not interested in. Just a stellar cast, great acting, a good storyline. Enjoyed it even more the second time around. I am surprised to read so many negative reviews. To me, every scene was a beautiful piece of art.
The mark of a good film for me is if it lingers in your mind after watching and makes you think. I thought all the actors were mesmerising for the reasons already stated above. Any movie with Christian Bale and Jeremy Renner in isn’t going to be bad though. Apparently Renner’s performance garnered the review that it was like he made the character he was based on come back to life he was that convincing. The same can be said for his portrayal of Jeffrey Dahmer in the film Dahmer – that is where I first got wind of how talented Renner is.
I found Jennifer Lawrence also to be charismatic and a one-off character. I say one off, I don’t really know anyone like that, except for perhaps myself. I liked her performance of that character.
Bale is extremely talented and committed. The weight he put on and his willingness to look ugly/ridiculous/fat/thin adds to each of his characters and has done throughout his career. I first saw him in The News Boys (Newsies) – check that out if you can!
Lastly, the film’s ambiance transported me right into that world, you could call it style over substance, but that isn’t a crime. The director has even said he isn’t about plot but about character. Well this film was definitely about character and it was great.
I am actually planning to watch the film again as I just enjoyed being in that world so much fun.
The movie was set in the 1970s, when many of the countries of the region were more secular. There are several casinos in Cairo, Sharm-el-Sheikh, and Taba even now. A casino in Lebanon stayed open during the civil war and today is operated by Caesars International. When Saddam Hussein was in power in Iraq, there were casinos in Baghdad. During the 1970s, when the Shah was still in power in Iran, casinos did quite well there. And Turkey had a big casino industry up until the 1990s.
