lol @ a boxer changing his style so quickly

This is the most ridiculous flaw in the movie.
Hope is a face first brawler with zero defence, that is the style he has had programmed into his muscle memory over the course of a long career. Suddenly with a few months training he is able to change his style completely to a defensive counter puncher.

Give me a break. Surely no one buys into this.

reply

He didn't change his style completely, he was told basic defense and to jab, nothing crazy, no crazy footwork, he already had speed and endurance... he wasn't very good at defense and he only saved the southpaw punch to the very end... he was still a brawler. The time frames are my only problem.

Jack-Tripper,

You know absolutely nothing about boxing. Less than nothing.

Roy Jones Jr. used to switch from unorthodox righty to southpaw constantly in matches. He's absolutely famous for it and the fact that he's in this movie and you still don't know that shows your lack of boxing knowledge.

Hell, both PacMan and DeLaHoya do it as well. Marvin Hagler used to do it.

This was in the ring on a REGULAR basis EVERY fight.

So please, go back to your cage of zero boxing wisdom. I'm an unorthodox righty and took boxing lessons from Hank Cisco who produced Michael Grant. I switched to southpaw often. The only reason I trained was to sharpen my striking for Muay Thai.

It took me about a week to get comfortable doing it. I am not ambidextrous, nor do I have superpowers.

reply

Sorry, changing stance is different to changing style.

I am a competent amateur boxer and can change from orthodox to southpaw reasonably comfortably, usually known as a switch-hitter.

Changing style- brawler/slugger to counter-puncher, or in- to out-boxer, etc.- is different.

Yep, it's possible to do it and learn, but such a rapid transformation is a bit unlikely. Still, that's Hollywood fiction for you...

reply

Changing hands is not changing style. Very few "seek and destroy" style boxers have long careers. Or long careers where they have success throughout it. And the reason is because once they lose a step, they are done. They can't fight any other way. It's like Tyson or Frazier becoming lead jab type fighters.

reply

lol @ your inability to suspend disbelief .

reply

Well said. Great performance!

reply

I would imagine most of the audience bought it, because they, like me, know next to nothing about boxing.

3 years as an amateur? Either you weren't very good or terrified of moving up. It's adorable that you tried though.

reply

Sadly, people bought it. These boxing movies are made by people who have no understanding/knowledge of the sport, and they are praised by audiences who also, have no understanding/knowledge of the sport. This is a straight up Lifetime movie melodrama that uses boxing as a mere backdrop to tell it's sappy story.

I watched the "behind the scenes" doc and Antoine Fuqua seems to know something about boxing.

Too bad he doesn't know more about film making. The movie was bad, and ridiculous.

that was done for dramatic sake (yes it is a movie) but many boxers change the style over time, esp. as they age. Miguel Cotto under Roach is a very different fighter for instance; he is much more a boxer than he used to be.

I am a boxing fan and did not find it to be a huge leap. While he was more a puncher than boxer, I did not take it to that he had zero defense. quite the contrary, the boxing sequences were pretty well done and he was catching many punches. and in the end, he was still a puncher, he just had a more versatile game.

I took more offense to the final knockout from an uppercut from distance! :)

The hack writer Kurt Sutter stole it from another movie. John Garfield did it in They Made Me a Criminal (1939)

By th way if you ever get a chance to watch it, it was a great movie. It plays on Turner network occasionally. I would love to go into more detail about the movie but don't want to spoil it. They Made Me a Criminal (1939)
