PTA's best film

Love all of them, but this one is definitely my favorite. The acting, dialogue, costumes, locations, and directing were all the best out of any his films to me. I've seen this movie probably ten times and it never gets old. Fantastic film!

Me too. After a 2nd watching of TWBB that moved up to a close 2nd and I remember liking that movie at the time, but thinking I would never want to sit through it again. I was wrong. I've watched IV about 10 times this year since first seeing it on DVD. Never tire of it.

reply

It might be the most rewatchable film I've ever seen. I've watched it about 10 times as well and it seems like the first time every time. I can take it as a comedy, drama, thiriller, mystery, anything. Absolutely magical.

reply

Not sure if it's my favorite, but I can totally see it eventually being that.

This is mystifying to me. For me, Magnolia, Hard Eight (Sidney), and Boogie Nights are his masterpieces. I can't comprehend how anyone could think this movie is better than those. But hey: de gustibus non est disputandum.

Ok I can understand magnolia, but boogie nights and hard eight better than inherent vice? No way.

reply

You people are insane if you think IV is better than Boogie Nights lol That's just laughable. Boogie Nights is a masterpiece and a true modern classic.

That's like saying Pulp Fiction is Tarantino's weakest film. The only way you can interpret a statement like that is to say the person making it is just trying to get attention because there's no other logical explanation.

Everything about Boogie Nights is memorable and unfortunately everything about IV is forgettable. IV is possibly his weakest film. It is in my opinion.

If I really wanted attention I would say punch drunk love is his best film you twit. Clearly you prefer the immature and much easier to watch Boogie Nights over the more complex and well done Inherent Vice. No worries.

reply

Here we go, the old "you didn't understand it argument"

So There will be Blood and The Master are both inferior intellectual works next to IV? IV is in no way some sort of profoundly intellectual film.

Ah, yes a perfect example of a mature discussion.

IMO Inherent Vice is by far his best film (and one of my favourite films ever), but I can certainly see why other people might not like it and that's fine.

reply

Oh yeah Inherent Vice is in my top ten so it's logical I think that, yes. Boogie Nights and The Master don't really say anything, Inherent Vice is about the death of an era and the hippie movement searching for answers.

It's baffling to me your dislike of Inherent Vice. From my point of view, Boogie Nights and The Master are all surface with nothing going on underneath the style and plot. Inherent Vice on the other hand can be taken as a statement or observation in so many ways with PTA's best scenes to date (Doc and Shasta in the rain, Doc driving Coy home, Spotted Dick's party and Coy and Doc's conversation,etc.).

reply

Then you have a guy like me who thinks There Will Be Blood is his masterpiece. Boogie Nights, Magnolia. Shoot ... Punch Drunk Love might not be his best but it still had some great scenes, and i do recall a meaningful subtext. Its all just opinion.

This film is slowly growing on me i must say. im still unsure if i believe all the mind control theories but i really did like the the overall vibe. Its hard for me to call IV and The Master perfect 10s due to pacing issues. I can say I do like both films tho.

Boogie Nights and TWBB are both classics. Boogie Nights surprised me with its range of emotions.

I am glad somebody mentioned the Coy and Doc scenes. They are always what i remember about this film whenever i think about watching it again. From the first in that mist to the second at the party the lighting, score atmosphere of that scene is awesome, and then you have that score playing as he drops him home it really is a beautiful and touching scene.

I am right in the sweet spot of this film at this moment, i watched it on release and liked it without really getting it and then i saw the reaction of everyone and was a little surprised but oh well, then saw it again and still didn't get it but again enjoyed it nothing more. Yet it was one of those films that always has stuck in my head and one marked down as 'need to re watch again soon'

And now i am at the stage where everything has gone in and i can now appreciate the plot and the intricacies of the story, the honesty of it and the soul whilst also enjoying all of the superficial elements on top.

I said yesterday that i think it might be number 2 after Boogie Nights but i think thats because i don't want to be rash and people laugh at me because honestly i think it could be Number 1

you necrobumped this shitty film to talk to the ghost of some imdb member? This movie sucks and the first and only movie I ever walked out on. I sat through Spice World and John Q instead of this pile of horse shit.

reply

You are entitled to your opinion. I am glad you enjoyed Spice world though

reply

I didn't, but it wasn't painfully bad like this movie.

According to Amazon I bought Inherent Vice on blu ray in 2015. I never watched it, I just found it in a box from my last move two years ago. I don't recall why I never watched. I might have mentioned to a friend who is a HUGE PTA fan that I'd just bought it and he told me it sucked, so it started slipping down my 'must watch' list until it got absorbed into my absurdly huge backlog of un-watched discs.

The last two PTA movies I first-watched were Phantom Thread and Licorice Pizza. I quite liked PT. I thought LP kinda stank. I just checked LP's RT and MC ratings... both are 90%. With that in mind, I'm very curious to find out how IV strikes me. (RT 74%, MC 81%)

Inherent Vice is hard work initially but worthwhile. While I watched it I found the insanity of it overwhelming and difficult to digest, but at the same time I could tell I was watching a top quality film that needs multiple viewings.

I haven’t gotten around to a second viewing, but it doesn’t surprise me that those who have are falling under its spell.

PTA's craft is undeniable in this, and I'm sure it's rich and bursting with various references to things that I would need a guide to know about. But as a movie, a piece of entertainment one must sit down and pay attention to, I couldn't stick with it more than 30 minutes at a time. I've never had any issue staying riveted to one of his movies before. Based on what little I knew about Phantom Thread, I expected it to be boring. It wasn't, not even remotely. As much as I failed to enjoy Licorice Pizza, I still had no problem just sitting and watching it, it held my attention easily. But Inherent Vice, my mind kept wandering. I kept looking at my phone. Something would happen in the movie that would trigger me to do a google search about something, simply because that was more interesting to me than the movie itself. It had a few cool moments here and there, but overall... bleh. It'll be a looong time before I would ever want to sit through this again to see if multiple viewings helps.

reply

It took me two sittings. Like I said - hard work, but I do think about it every now and then and want to revisit it at some point.

I actually think Joaquin Phoenix just doesn’t have the likability of someone like Daniel Day Lewis. He repels me in this, The Master and even Joker. The only role I found him endearing in was Max California in 8MM.
