In a way, I am glad Depp is done

I love Depp as Sparrow, but it was clear the filmakers didn’t know what to do with his character.

When AWE is over, he is, again, without a ship or a crew sailing in a small boat.

With Stranger Tides, he gets his ship, but it is stuck in a bottle.

It was a relief for me that at the end of DMTNT that Jack is back as the Captain of the Black Pearl.

However, he ended right where the first film ends. As fun as he is, we don’t see much character development. It’s a constant pattern of him being a mischievous pirate that decides to do the right thing at the end.

If they don’t want to change him anymore, then Sparrow’s story should end with DMTNT. Let us imagine that he kept adventuring the seas as Captain of the Black Pearl.

All good things come to an end, but the best way to move on is to have him handing off the reigns to whoever the next character that will be the center of the franchise is. To simply change course with Barbosa's daughter as the center is really pathetic. She wasn't interesting or strong enough to really become a focal point, but she was apparently contracted to reprise the role in the 6th film which signaled the direction they are headed. If that turns out to be the case, I won't bother watching it and will simply accept that it all ended with the 5th movie.

The weakness in the films over the series wasn't Depp's character as much as it was the poor stories he was stuck in. To me it was a bit like James Bond movies. I didn't blame Roger Moore for the campy turd fest that the Bond Franchise became while he was Bond, he wasn't writing the god awful movies he was just playing the part as it was written. The same thing happened with Pirates, bad writer equals bad movies no matter who you have as actors. The actors don't write the stories they just follow the scripts they are given.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, I don’t blame Depp for this. He does a great job with the materials he is given. It is the writers that are the problem.

I am just saying that if the writers are going to keep doing the same thing with Sparrow, it’s best just to leave the character alone.

As flawed as the fifth film is, I prefer they conclude it as it is, than have an ending like AWE or ST.

I just wish they invest a fraction of the money the piss away on CGI to hire a good writer to create a script and then tell the directors and everyone else to just fucking go with the script and not try to "make it better" which I'm betting really is just an excuse for some to get themselves writing credit for more money or because of some narcissistic belief that they writers.

“reins.” Literacy matters.

A kind reigns. A horseman uses reins.

Writing will NOT magically become better just by removing Depp/Sparrow ...

reply

No, but at least they can leave that character alone.

Like many other fans, I have fond memories of Sparrow and I hate to see his character ruined.

He got the Pearl back and is Captain now. Let him continue being happy as a Captain.

They can do another film with other characters and let them play with them as much as they want.
