Questions about gender equality

These questions have been floating in my head.

1. Do women really have to take on masculine roles in order to be empowered?

2. Why do people talk about the lack of women in technology jobs but, they never mention the lack of male nurses or, male elementary school teachers?

3. Does gender equality always equal happiness, or is it better to have freedom of choice.

4. Do you think married women have it harder than past generations? These days they have to play the role of the bread winner & the housekeeper.

1. The insinuation that there rolls/positions that are inherently gendered to begin with should answer your question. It's about being respected as a person regardless of sexual value.

2. This goes back to inherently gendered rolls. On the surface, your question seems to be about gender bias toward men. However, it's not. Men aren't bountiful in positions like nursing, elementary education, and homemaking because they find these positions insulting. It would be an insult to most men to be asked/required to become a stay at home husband/dad. Think about that for a minute. These positions are so unimportant and degrading that a man would be embarrassed amongst his peers in most circles.

3. I don't understand your question, gender equality IS the freedom of choice. Does it equal happiness? No, but it's not about happiness, it's about doing what's right and good because it is right and good.

4. The short answer is maybe. For instance, knowing one's value may be easier for many, but may feel like a prison for others. But what's worse, a prison or being stretched thin to where your value is compromised in all areas.

When thinking about the first question, I like to consider it from a historical perspective. Masculine roles are historically roles with power. So any group lacking power will emulate the group in power.

1. What's a masculine role? And how does it differ from a feminine role?
2. Depending on who you're talking to, people are talking about the lack of male nurses and male elementary teachers.
3. Happiness is subjective.
4. Women in the past also played the role of bread winner and housekeeper, so...?
