I didn't even follow the point of the film, but I surely didn't see anything hippy or liberal about it... unless oddball comedies are liberal... and any movie with drugs in it is a hippy film. If one hates any film with drugs in it, I suggest they don't watch movies where the plot summary mentions drugs.
I have never even called a film conservative elitist trash, which I assume is the counter insult. But I wouldn't watch a movie that I would label conservative. I can't even think of a conservative movie that is even worth giving as an example... do they make those? Maybe Rosemary's Baby or Wicker Man? I'm not sure if those count, but I always found them very christian and anti-paganism. And that's the essence of conservatism in America. right? Anti-everything until you get white Christians marrying their prettier cousins while watching football and popping out babies for the lord. :P

I actually thought there was a pseudo conservative message in that the alternate world required acceptance to group think and that those who did not comply were summarily executed (reeducated,) whereas the free world (ours) wouldn't put up with arachnicide. Great movie, don't get where you're coming from.

Hippy isn't a bad word either, the hippies were about the peace, standing up against the vietname war, and about the colour the flowers, and the power of the music in that time,

drug use doesn't make one a hippy neither does being a hippy make you exclusively a drug user,
if anything this movie would be more libertarian then liberal, which is closer defined as a conservative a point of view.

I personally prefer the term "Progressive," but it is too tied up in the idea that all progress is good, when in, fact, there is always a point of diminishing returns.
In our verbally mutilated culture, "liberal" means good and "Conservative" means bad when, in fact, Conservatives are the true Classical Liberals that believe in freedom of conscience and the right to control and be responsible for what we ourselves do.
I despise how we use the term "liberal" to describe democrats and to indicate a perfect (and unobtainable) utopia, while most of the rest of the world takes it to be what it originally meant - less state control and regulation and militant enforcement of social and economic standards.
One last thing - Utopia is a translation of "Nowhere." From the original Greek.
