Don Coscarelli should have never been given this film to make

I realize that Wong really likes Coscarelli and he's made some films that have somewhat cult followings but this film is a complete failure and should have never been given to Coscarelli to make. There, I said it.

I saw Phantasm (i could only make it through the first one). It sucks. I saw Bubba Ho-tep, watchable, slightly funny - it was ok. JDATE was an excellent novel. Coscarelli butchered it. The book has vivid detail that make it ideal for converting to the big screen. It was entirely possible to interpret it in a way that still held together the story from the book. The final product fails at this miserably while STILL providing subpar CGI that makes it feel like it was made in the 80's.

The strange thing is, I think Wong is completely aware of this, perhaps in denial or perhaps realizing that the damage is already done and there is nothing he can do but try to sell this POS to us, backpedaling quite a bit in interviews and on his JDATE facebook feed "Oh, I realize now that there is no way we could include every character without making this film 5 hours long". Could they have at least given us a proper introduction to Amy? She's integral to the book as well as the sequel. She comes off as unimportant in the film. How about explain why he's digging in the beginning of the film? It's really effin' important in the book. Someone who is actually good at converting a book to film would have been more appropriate. Someone who can bring to life an alternate universe on film would have been more appropriate. I'm not saying you need James Cameron, Steven Soderberg or ILM. There are a ton of young, hungry, talented filmmakers out there that could have made this happen and probably on the same budget.

I'm so annoyed. Not just because it was disappointing. But because I can't un-watch this film. It makes reading Spiders really difficult. Hopefully when the third book comes out, I will have long forgotten the JDATE: The movie.

I never have high expectations when watching movies based on novels I have read. It was not the best, nor worst film adaption of a novel.

I guess I'm lucky I didn't read the book first. I LOVED this movie. The cast was good and very likable. The direction was tight, the efx were excellent, the dialog was intriguing, great cinematographer and editing, etc etc With so many crappy movies in the genre I can't understand how anyone can complain about Coscarelli's films.

Maybe you should stop watching movies adapted from your favorite books so you aren't disappointed.

I hope the OP reads this.
I saw this film about a year ago, I had no idea it was a book and for the first half I thought it was a pretty decent film. The second half felt a bit rushed.
Last christmas my little sister bought me the book, I almost didn't read it because I thought I'd already seen it all in the film, but I'm so glad I started.
I can't really judge the book as a whole as I'm only about 90 pages in, but at 90 pages in (out of almost 500 pages) the film is already half way through! I can't imagine how much they must have missed out!

What I can say about the book is that it is already 10 times funnier than film. Simple stuff they missed out like "THEY CHINA FOOD!".
Not only is it funnier but it is actually pretty damn scary in parts. The brilliant way it's written manages to give you that slight feeling of dread and foreboding doom that the film doesn't deliver. They really have left some of the best bits out from what I've read so far. There was so much more to see in the part where he goes into the dead Robert Marley's house.

I'm not bashing the director (but apparently if I did I'd get told to go and watch transformers or something...), I enjoyed the film when I thought it was an original story. All I'm saying is, if you enjoyed the film you should definitely check out the book.

Well said, glad you were able to read the first book because as you said it is very entertaining. I recently picked up the second book, haven't had a chance to get to it yet but I have high hopes for that as well.

Loved the book, loved the film. Looking forward to This Movie is Full of Spiders.

The movie was a lot more entertaining than you.

If OP thinks PHantasm sucks Bubba Ho Tep is merely watchable and finds Coscarelli
an awful choice, I don't think I even want to give a decent reply.

He filtered out the most important narrative to give a bit of structure within the
timeframe they had. If you want to film this narrative in detail you have a movie
of 5 hours.

I mean the movie is only a 1/4 of what the novel was really.

I remember watching this late one night and I completely forgot about it. I re-watched it after re-reading the novel and was shocked at how much was cut from the novel.

But I started thinking about it and for this to be a two hour movie a lot would have to be cut, but a mini-series....

I know nowadays everyone thinks books should just be adapted into miniseries and keep 95% of the novel on the screen, and I don't think that necessary with every novel, but for something like John Dies at the End, that has so many weird twists, and interesting events within it that build to the end, it does kind of deserve it.

There was so much dealing with Amy, the dog, John, Korrok, Marconi, that the movie just skipped over that the movie barely makes any sense, and doesn't really leave it very open for those characters if someone did want to do the sequel to it.
