Apparently this movie is racist?

I've read a lot of reviews complaining that this movie is racist or whatever, even though throughout the rest of review they're saying how intense it is. To anyone who's seen this movie yet, is this really that "racist," or are those critics just trying to get offended?

reply

Anybody who thinks the movie is racist a) hasn't seen it, or b) has seen it and is a *beep* *beep* trying to drum up controversy where none should exist. There's nothing even remotely racist about this movie.

reply

Its racist alright, I've seen it and I'm not usually one to say things like that.

reply

People tend to cry "racism" over pretty much anything and everything these days. Look on pretty much any IMDb message board, and you'll usually find a thread accusing said movie/tv show of being "racist". Some of these threads are created by trolls. Many simply misuse the word.

I didn't see anything "racist" about this movie.

Externally, there is nothing explicitly racist about this movie. Internally, the story depicts an immoral unethical corporation practicing racism in the form of exploiting the population of a developing country. The reaction by locals is unsurprisingly xenophobic and the revolutionaries take it out on all foreigners.

The movie is not making a statement that all corporations are evil. It is just an ugly truth that there have been some bad corporations in the past, are some bad corporations in the present and will be other bad ones in the future.

The movie is not stereotyping SE Asians as white people hating murderers. Desperate people in any developing country can reach a tipping point and resort to violence for change and will target what they see as the cause, whether it is exploitation by foreign companies, the local government or both. It happens in developed countries also. We constantly have examples in the US.

The movie is just about what the hell is Owen Wilson going to do to save his family in a foreign country that has been taken over by angry revolutionaries and that will possibly be plunged into a civil war.

reply

Of course it's racist. Any liberal thinks that EVERY movie these days is racist in some way.

reply

full on liberal here, I don't think the movie is racist or xenophobic. I see it as a direct retort to the CEO of Nestle saying that water supplies should be privatized.

I've got blisters on my fingers!!

reply

No.

reply

The word, racist, has been used so often and incorrectly the past few years it has pretty much been neutered. It's akin to the "Boy who cried wolf.

reply

I just watched the movie for the first time and there was nothing racist to me. To be honest, I don't even have a clue how it may have been considered racist, except that it included more than one race. That seems to be the only thing needed nowadays.

reply

Yeah. Apparently, ugly truth through art equals racism now. So that makes me wonder. What the fck are we able to make movies about that doesn't offend the delicate sensibilities of those pansy-ass yuppie critics??

Pretty much this. Facts and history are now racist. All movies must be comic book adaptations, completely homogenized and diversified so no one feels left out or gets "offended."
