I've read a lot of reviews complaining that this movie is racist or whatever, even though throughout the rest of review they're saying how intense it is. To anyone who's seen this movie yet, is this really that "racist," or are those critics just trying to get offended?
The 'rebels' are basically used as props. There is no explanation for why they are angry at foreigners. Your immediate assumption is that since they are killing the white people they must be bad. Did you ever stop and think: Maybe they have a good reason to want to kill Owen Wilson? Maybe Owen Wilson is the kingpin of a child porn empire, coming to round up little local girls. We have no idea. Maybe the local guys are *beep* sick and tired of having their kids stolen by Owen Wilson, and that prick deserves to die. We'll never know, because the movie writers don't bother to give us any backstory. And you probably never even considered that maybe he's really the bad guy, did you? Without a backstory, you immediately assigned 'good' and 'bad' roles to the white and brown people.
Try this experiment: Imagine the same scenarios, but flip the colors. Put U.S. special forces outfits on the guys busting out windows and *beep* *beep* up. Give them all blond hair, kind eyes and chiseled jaws. Turn Owen Wilson into a short, greasy, black-haired ethnic dude with wild eyes in a fancy suit by a pool. Give the characters absolutely zero backstory. All of a sudden the exact same scenes can be viewed as the story of heroic American soldiers chasing an evil drug lord. That's why it's racist.
If the "brown people", whatever that means, which btw i suppose you want to represent (probably without asking) want to make a movie with "brown people" as the main characters and the "white people" as the antagonists/rebels or whatever, i guess the "brown people" are fully entitled to do so. ...i hope yo understand how ridiculous this sounds.
No group is talking more about skin-color or give skin color so much attention than the so called anti-racists. Therefor in fact many times it's easy to unintentional take them for the actual racists.
I thought it was quite funny, when the guy was shouting "I'm an American!".. like shut up, don't give them even more reason to kill you haha. The world already hates you lot as it is. Movie was alright though, but the stupid American kids annoyed me immensely. I wanted them to die, but this is Hollywood, no such luck.
Not sure how it's racist. They are in another country and many countries overseas are not fond of Americans. True story.
Americans that enter other countries and try to take over their economy and way of life to profit and make money are the racist ones. We can't expect other countries to have American point of views.
1 Americans are not a race. 2 Rebels had a legitimate reason to uprise and Pierce Brosnan character described why.
It's 100% truth that USA does that to foreign countries. In 2009 they tried to eliminate my country's priminister. That's official Intelligence Agency's reports. After they failed they forced him to step down to put a puppet up. And you know what happened next. Memorandum and Austerity. Try to guess the country. I wish we could do an uprising like that also and burn all the politicians and diplomats at the stake. No that unnecessarily brutal to tourists though...
It´s not. A lot of people like to shout "racist" to every little thing on the net. they the ones that fuel the hate. there´s no racism on this movie,, but some people would fell more comfortable it this was made in Sweden for example, i guess...
