Portland is the whitest major city in the US.

Even so, look closely and you'll see some POC.

Portland is 76% white. Portland, Maine is whiter than Portland, Oregon.

i'm guessing the OP has never actually been to portland. yeah, there aren't any black people there. it's a super white city. they like it like that but you'd never hear them admit to as much.

There are black people but yeah....not many. Its very white & so unfortunately hipster. Love hearing stories from the old timers about portland before the hipster infestation.

reply

There have been black people in the series if you watch it. What about Ronald D. Moore? He's been in several.

It's a very white city.

My parents moved there from Denver and I've visited several times...it's like, the whitest city I've ever seen.

We're all stories, in the end. Just make it a good one, eh?

We moved here from Baltimore in 96. We were walking around Clackamas Town Center, and as I surveyed the selection of stores, I commented that we could just as well be in Towson Town Center. Princess looked at me and said, "really?" I looked around and said, "well, there aren't any black people, but the stores are the same." Then we went to Corvallis for a visit, and the "whiteness jump" from PDX to Corvallis was the same as Balmer to PDX. Then we went to Bend, a town that is so white, that I, whose relatives got here in 1632, felt like a minority. Statistically though, I believe that Maine (where my people be from) is technically the whitest.

When I got here, I was told to stay away from KILLINGSworth, just avoid KILLINGSworth St. At the time, KILLINGSworth was nicer than my neighborhood in Balmer. As seen in the last episode, Killingsworth and N PDX are now the most gentrified neighborhoods in town. You see, in Portland, the way they improve the "ghetto" is to move all the people of color to another neighborhood further away from town. In a way, Portland has created "Hampsterdam" (The Wire reference), only they will never admit it.

In college my housemates were a Jewish guy from Miami Beach and an Asian guy from from San Francisco. I took them up to the cabin in Maine for Fall break one year. The Jewish guy said that whenever he went into a small town, he looked in the white pages and counted the number of Cohens to see how friendly it might be. The town in Maine had none. After a week, the Asian guy commented that it was the first time in his life he'd gone an entire week without seeing another Asian person.

Portland has people of color, but statistically I'd say that Latinos, Asians, and Native Americans outnumber the Blacks.
