Why Naveen Andrews????

Why in every (British) movie any Asian character has to be played by Naveen Andrews??? it's ming boggling... Can't they find any other actor who ca play Asian character

reply

It was laughable that they even had him play an Iraqi on LOST. Have you seen what a typical Iraqi looks like? Naveen looks so obviously Indian (a dark skinned one at that, although there is nothing wrong with being dark) I am still baffled about why he was cast in that role. Honestly, if they got a mixed race black guy to play the role, it would have been more convincing. That said, he is still a good actor.

They probably cast him for his perfromance in Planet Terror

Sikh is a religion not a race. Go see Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal. You will see Sikhs that don't look remotely Indian. As far as any role look again. Kal Pen and Danny Pudi are more active. He hasn't been as busy as other actors and some of his roles were originally written for a white. Easy and Double Vision are two examples.

Mixed race like Eliot Knight?

Ever since the "he's to dark to play" remark I have looking up pictures of Iraqis and Arabs. I found out they come in a variety of shades of brown, some as dark or darker than Andrews. I alos found out that not all Iraqis are Arab and that true ethnic Arabs are a varied people. It depends on what part of the country and whether they live in the city or the country. Part of Naveen's beauty is his color and I do like his acting. Clearly I am biased but I do wonder about the comments about his color. What do you think of Sendhil Ramamurthy or Kal Penn?

I have seen some Sihks but not a lot so I don't pretend to be an expert. I just didn't see any difference between what I saw and Naveen Andrews. I have mentioned I do like him so I am biased. He hasn't been all that active in the movies and franly Dev Patel seems to be getting a lot of roles not Naveen Andrews. Again I am biased so I don't have a problem with what little he does do. Since you do have a bias would you like him in anything, have you liked him in anything?

I may not agree with you but at least you are honest about your dislike. I can see where he isn't everyone's cup of tea, but as I said before I do like him. But he has done some stinkers. Animals is a movie I have seen but don't own because even though Naveen hammed it up beautifully the other characters I just couldn't like.

Each Arab nationality looks different. Iraqis don't look like Egyptians. Egyptians don't look Gulf Arabs. Gulf Arabs don't look like Moroccans. Some are dark and some are light. I am from the UAE, and I know a lot of Iraqis, none of them look like Naveen. Naveen could pass for a Yemeni, or even a Gulf Arab who is mixed, but an Iraqi?...Possible, but far from likely.

He doesn't play every South Aisian or Arab character out there. At one time there was chatter that he was on Heroes. As most of us know that was Sendhil Ramamurthy. A tweet I saw credited him with the 1998 movie City of Angels. That was Shishur Kirup. Naveen Andrews has also been confused with Kal Penn. Clearly none of these gentlemen look alike. My point is that in every (British) movie Asian characters are played by actors that may be similar in appearence,(if you squint and look really, really fast).

You have a point, but there are many answers to your question. He is very talented and has the recent fame and glory from his role in Lost series, which was seen by 10 to 20 million viewers per episode. "Everybody" knows him. He also had a few other good roles, one in the English Patient if I am not mistaken.

By the way, I liked his work in this movie.

Diana was not England's but Hasnat Khan's, that's what I got from this genuinely moving story, Naomi Watts' accent was cut-glass perfect & her voice really was like Diana's. Naveen Andrews was probably chosen because of his fame in 'Lost', although he didn't quite look like Hasnat Khan, the acting of falling in love with each other was excellent. The humour & playfulness shown by both actors was very believable as they fell in love & showed the coldness of the Royal's to the warmth of Hasnat & his family... Diana was a wonderful person & all she ever wanted was to be in love & happy but outside influences saw to it that it would not happen. I still believe in the theory that she was murdered along with Dodi Al-Fayed by the English establishment... Great film, do not go by the people denigrating this film because of their own prejudiced agenda, it's wonderful, see it...

Sayid was an excellent choice for the role

because he's a very good actor.

He's a fantastic actor. There's also a very few Indian actors that star in English speaking movies.

and the critics are making sure they stay a minority. I don't know what movie they were watching but Diana was good.

It's true...there aren't a whole lot of good British Asian actors that can be cast in a leading role for a Hollywood movie...if anyone disagrees, feel free to suggest a few names.
