Not listed in AFI’s top 10 films

https://nypost.com/2024/12/05/entertainment/these-movies-just-saw-their-oscar-chances-plummet/

AFI’s year-end list usually forecasts the Oscar noms. It’s extremely rare for a film to miss this list and then get an Oscar nom

The Substance missed AFI’s list, so Best Picture seems out.

It’s still possible for Demi Moore to grab a nomination for Best Actress. I’d be glad if she not only got the nomination but also won it

reply

I’m not surprised. It might be too extreme for their sensibilities.

The Substance probably doesn't meet the AFI's eligibility criteria of -- and I quote -- 'significant creative and/or production elements from the United States.'

While it's technically an international co-production it's predominantly French.

reply

Conclave is European and still met the criteria

reply

Yup. Conclave was produced by, among others, FilmNation Entertainment and Indian Paintbrush, which are two independent US production companies.

The Substance was co-produced by Fargeat's own French company, Blacksmith, and Working Title. Working Title is a British company. But these days it is a subsidiary of Universal Pictures (which, obviously, is from the US).

In some sources the film is listed as a France-UK-US co-production, in others it is listed as a France-UK co-production. I don't know precisely what the AFI's eligibility criteria are or what the word 'significant' means to them, but it's quite possible -- likely, in fact -- that they don't regard the film as American at all because an American production company isn't directly involved.

Dune II best of year, lol ,all credibility is gone

reply

yep

It's not on the list because it's not very good. The film is a melange of regurgitated body horror tropes, all done better elsewhere, with lip service paid to the cliched but fashionable message that women feel the need to live up to certain (mostly self-imposed) beauty standards. It was also much too long for the tiny amount of plot it contained. There's only so much gory animatronic writhing on bathroom floors you can watch before it becomes tedious.

reply

Agreed. I'm streaming it as I type this. It's way too long and so many plot holes.
