why Elisabeth have to switch after what Sue did?

since she hated Sue so much why still switch? Seems like the movie didnt explore that part as well as Sue need to switch due to the lack of stabilizer. Really curious if there is any adverse effect if Elisabeth didnt switch after more than 7 days

Yes, she would face adverse effect if she didn't switch. She was wisely following the rules, given her grown-up & mature age, so we couldn't happen to see any adverse effect and the young version was still being reckless and didn't follow discipline.

The only way to 'not switch' was to terminate the younger version.

I felt that part could be explored since Sue didnt honor the agreement, Eliza should do the same too and delay the switch.

She preferred being Sue over being Elisabeth. It's kind of obvious.

I will once again state because everyone is missing it: they are the same person. Elisabeth prefers being Sue. That's why she keeps fucking herself over by spending longer and longer times being Sue. She gets to live as Sue when she's in that body because her consciousness transfers to whatever body is awake.

As for adverse effects, that is an interesting question. I don't think it would actually affect Elisabeth OR Sue physically, but Liz would need to keep feeding the Sue body unless she kills it, or else it will die on its own once it runs out of food. And that's kind of wasteful if she never wanted to switch back again. My logic for this is that the "termination procedure" seems to just be instant euthanasia, which indicates that nothing would happen to Elisabeth when the Sue body dies. It's possible that it's some special magic chemical that unlinks their bodies along with killing the copy, but without the movie giving us any information like that, I assume it's just a simple instadeath drug.

The manual does simply say "Switch every 7 days WITHOUT EXCEPTION", which throws me off since that would sorta count as an exception. But the main thing that seems to affect Elisabeth's body when Sue overstays her welcome is the increased amount of spinal fluid taken, and Elisabeth doesn't need to take Sue's spinal fluid to stay alive and healthy. So we haven't really seen any indication that there would be adverse effects going the other way around.

Pretty sure her consciousness wasnt transfered during switch since they are both conscious at the last part, also Eliza didnt know at all what Sue did after switching (which is why she is watching the telly to see her) and vice versa (Sue didnt know about the binge eating till she wakes up after the switch). I believe Sue is some sort of clone of Eliza younger self and both are separate beings.

If they're separate beings, why does Sue dies after she killed Elizabeth?

reply

she was injected with the almost full dose of the termination serum which hasten her deterioration otherwise I believe she should have survive at least a few days longer.

It sounds like a viable theory. I made another post asking if they were the same person or not. There are people who claim they were one being, but if they were the same, why does one doesn't recollect the actions of the other?

reply

I think only the script writer can answer that one

reply

I agree that it SHOULD be like that, but it's very clear that they are two distinct personas and they do not share a singular consciousness. Which begs the question, what is Elisabeth getting out of all this?

reply

my issue is basically with the entire premise of the film -
I can understand if she got a new body and was able to switch, but instead, she gives life to another body with another mind - there is no 'together' - she's still alone, only she loses one out of every 2 weeks - she doesn't benefit at all from this arrangement.

I do think there's a lot of interesting symbolism in this film - and it does have a lot to say about stardom, about hollywood, about obsession with youth, etc - but if you ignore all of that, the actual premise of the film is seriously flawed.

reply

You are correct.
There's no benefit for the person who consumes the substance
She's still ANOTHER person with her own conscience. The movie should have been about a change of "consciousness" to a younger version and experiencing life from that perspective.
