He runs into one of the brothers who strikes a conversation with him, and eventually there is a gunfight and Kevin Costner kills him.
Would somebody please explain that scene to me? What the hell were they talking about? They didn’t know each other. Why did Kevin Costner suspect that the other guy was going there in order to kill everybody?
Costner didn’t suspect that the sike brother was there to kill everybody. I think he just suspected that the brother was there to kill Marigold. Costner simply liked her and wanted to save her
How he knew the Sike brother was there to kill Marigold - I guess he just got a hunch based on the brother’s demeanor and such (and that the brother went up the hill to Marigold’s cabin) . They wanted to make Costner look like a shrewd judge of character by his ability to deduce that this Sike brother was a killer
When they walk up the hill, I think the Sike brother was trying to figure out what Costner was doing in town. And he might’ve been trying to intimidate Costner. I admit that the dialogue in this scene was poorly written and unclear
I do find it too coincidental that the woman and her salesman husband happen to go to the Sike brothers’ cabin to make a sale, and then another coincidence that the Sike brother runs into Costner (and gets killed)
It is not made explicit but I assumed that the brothers had tracked the woman who had almost killed their father and when they arranged the meeting for the sale of the land they knew exactly who they were dealing with, so it wouldn’t have been a coincidence.
