One of my favourite Emily Blunt performances and one of her most underrated films
From Director/Writer Lynn Shelton, who sadly passed a few years back.
This 2012 film is really a three hander comedy/darma 90 minute film,Jack (Mark Duplass) falls into bed with his best friend Iris (Emily Blunt) Lesbian Half sister Hannah (Rosemarie DeWitt) at Iris/Hannah fathers Holiday home. Hannah wants to have a child and uses the drunken one night stand with Jack to achieve that and Iris is in love with Jack who also loves her.And they have a falling out and then they all forgive one another.
That's pretty much all there is, not groundbreaking plot or twist or turns. Going by the threads here, that some people really dislike the Hannah using Jack to get pregnant storyline, it's always been the one part of the film that has never sit right with me. I rather it was more like Big Chill storyline of Glen Close/Kevin Kline characters helping out Mary Kay Place character to get pregnant by everything is on a equal level and Everyone involved is happy to help out. Rather then take advantage of a drunken guy and also poking holes a condom. But you wouldn't get the whole third act drama without it.
But even that, it's still one of my favourite Emily Blunt films. I like that Shelton let Emily Blunt keep her English accent for the film (Blunt accent is great) and her character Irish feels like the closet we get to seen the real Emily Blunt on screen. She's the heart of the film and you do feel bad for Iris when she finds out the truth. Blunt definitely evelates this film to a another level.
I don't mind Mark Duplass, he's fine in this. He does these type of roles in his sleep. It's always great to see the underrated and beautiful Rosemarie DeWitt in a lead role, even though her character Hannah is definitely very questionable in her actions. DeWitt is great.
I like that film is set almost in one location and that it's just down to three actors. It's got a warm cosy feel to it.
