Why, why, why???!!!

I'm sorry Hollywood, do you feel compelled to remake (quite badly, if I may add) a fantastic, Academy Award foreign film because you thought no one would care to read subtitles? How lazy have you become? I don't care how many Nicole Kidmans and Julia Roberts you can afford in your payroll, but this movie should have never, ever been made. I love the Argentinean film for its wit and amazing mystery build up... yours is just a poorly made xerox copy.

You also have the audacity to remake another German gem (Das Experiment) under the pretension that Standford University students playing guards and prisoners would never even imagined how out of control the experiment would turn. Here's a spoiler, it's mayhem and the good guys win.

Every remake you shove up to our throats is a loss of my faith in your ability to entertain, as well as lost revenue. It may not mean much to you, but I wish you luck writing the losses off your books.

Ugh... disgusting.

I brought the kleenex and a therapist to help you with your mental anguish over the evil remake....

One of the best things about all these pointless remakes (and that's what most of them are) is that they draw attention to the original film that younger audiences may not have seen. So they do serve a purpose and occasionally a couple of them turn out well.

What nonsense. I didn't even know it was a remake until I read your statement. It's a great movie and stands on its own two feet. Why do you assume that loads of Americans have watched the original if it wasn't shown at the box office in the U.S.?

reply

I could not agree more with the OP. The original film, El secreto de sus ojos, was perfect the way it was, with incredibly impressive and intense performances from Darín and Francella (both impeccable, as always).

Redoing hollywood-style versions of excellent films is not only sad and painful as it comes to show how such a big and powerful industry as Hollywood is runnning out of good, refreshing ideas. It is also a lost chance for those films to make money via DVD/ streaming distribution.

The only reason why I might consider paying 9 euros for the theatre ticket is watching Chiwetel Ejiofor in a main role.

A piece of advice for English-speakers (particularly American audiences): learn to read subtitles. It is not that hard, really and once you get used to it.

Yikes! .. ye Gods a remake!!! OK, so lets recall every detail of the original (if we ever watched it) and compare it with this one (if we ever watched that too) including the brand of toilet paper used by the crew and yes, you guessed it, the original from a zillion years ago was much softer (the toilet paper that is) and flushed in an instant. Whenever I wonder about how many sad people there are in the world I just login here and get confirmation.
