Question after S03E02
Maybe I missed something, but how did Joe know to get the jump on Eric Raeder?
shareMaybe I missed something, but how did Joe know to get the jump on Eric Raeder?
shareFrom the wiki:
Raeder was killed in Fall of 1962 by Joe Blake on the orders of Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler. Himmler had determined that Raeder was a liability to the career of then-Oberstgruppenführer John Smith, who was being groomed to replace George Lincoln Rockwell as Reichsmarschall of Nazi America.
Yeah thanks. That was cleared up in S03E05.
shareIts funny and interesting at the same time that they use real life references.

He was a Grand Admiral (highest rank) in the real world while only a Major equivalent in TV series. :D
Haha. Nice catch.
shareThe Raeder in the show was American born and much too young to be the famous admiral, it's likely his parents simply named him after the man.
shareOh yeah definitely. It would have to be since, like Rory noted, he had only attained the rank of a Major ... which is a pretty lowly rank in comparison to a Grand Admiral. I assumed it was just a tributary reference, but you're right they could have meant for him to be Erich's son.
shareErich Raeder the Grand Admiral was born on April 24, 1876. In our timeline he died on November 6, 1960 at the age of 84. So it would make sense if the High Castle Eric Raeder was his grandson, or simply named by his parents after a hero of the Reich, but he's nowhere near old enough to be him.
shareThe actor that plays him is in his late thirties so it's entirely possible he could be his son that he fathered in his fifties.
Interestingly, Raeder's mom makes an appearance in S02E07.
You're right, that's quite possible. Eric's demeanor, especially in season 1, makes him seem more like he's in his mid-twenties but if you assume the character and the actor are about the same age the math works out.
It seems as though a lot of the Reich elite in this show have children all over the place. The ones who weren't born to their wives can't be openly embraced for career reasons but they make sure those kids are taken care of, and given every opportunity for promotion. Their parentage may not be public knowledge but I'm guessing it's a poorly kept secret in the upper echelons.
When did we see Raeder's mother? I missed it.
I noticed she's in the credits but I didn't see her have any dialog. She must have been at Dr Adler's funeral when Smith gives his eulogy or in the background at the gathering at Smith's house when his kid passes out. Raeder's in the credits too but I didn't notice him with any dialog in the episode.
shareSame goes for the founder of the American Nazi party George Lincoln Rockwell who tried to team up with J Edgar and go toe to toe with John Smith.
He predictably proved to be no match for the Obergruppenführer when he met his demise at the end of a Cuban dagger in the back. And just as he was about to hit that Devil's Triangle after railing some good 'ole Cuban blow. He must have died rock hard.
