Was Kristen Stewart REALLY the best they could do?

I'm not like a big time Kristen Stewart hater, but to put it plainly- she wasn't appealing in this movie acting-wise or looks-wise. Not that she was bad in either aspect but when the title is SNOW WHITE and the Huntsman and the queen shows up Snow White in every way, that's a problem. She did a decent job but couldn't they have found an actor who could do a GREAT job? And wouldn't totally disappear next to Charlize?

When the movie ended my first comment to my friends was: Olivia Wilde would have been a better snow white.
I don't hate Kristen or anything. I just didn't see her as the leader Snow white is supposed to be...

Olivia Wilde would have been a better snow white

As would Scarlett Johansson...and Eliza Dushku...and Tyler Kain...and Amber Heard...and Nina Dobrev...and a couple dozen others.

Some of the actresses you mentioned are entirely too old for the part. I would not have liked to see Scarlett Johansson in this part given she is being used too much and she doesn't fit. Olivia Wilde is 30 years old. Elisa Dushku is 34 and Tyler Kain is 33. Scarlett Johansson is 30 years old, Amber Heard is 28 and Nina Dobrev is 26 and I don't think she fits the part. Kristen Stewart is only 24 now. Quite frankly if I was going to pick someone a little older it would be Romola Garai. She is the better actress and has done period pieces.

And most of young Hollywood. ANNE HATHAWAY. She is just so-o-o-o beautiful.

Not to worry, soon technology will catch up to Kritchen Stayout and we will be able to replace her ad hoc in ANY movie at the touch of a button: computers will be able to analyze an actor's talent and substitute for No-Talents like this one and that FAT (Melissa McFarty) failure who is going to ruin Ghostbastards. Our AI overlords will rule!

At that time she was Rupert Sanders' pet movie star. He liked her acting style in some other films and didn't dare to break away from her 'tradition'. The film was made to cater for her fans' taste. Yes, that was the best they could do.

reply

Wasn't he also banging her?

Snakes. Why'd it have to be snakes?

reply

Yep. He was *beep* her right after Robert Pattinson was doing her.

reply

Kirsten was used as bait as she had a huge fanbase from TWILIGHT....it seemed to have worked

At least the movie broke even. Without her i might have done worse

I know a lot of people harp on Kristen Stewart for her acting and her looks, but I think they are only looking at it from one angle. The screenwriting, dialogue, character arcs, story pacing, etc, are so poor, you can't rest the blame entirely on the shoulders of the actors. The Snow White in this film is unexceptional and dull -- and that is before you include Stewart into the equation. Perhaps it was the poor choice on the part of the screenwriters by having her locked away for 10 years, but her personality is painfully uninteresting. For someone who is suppose to possess this great inner beauty and spirit, none of that comes across. We don't a chance to see her grow or transform or build upon her character. The film just lazily transforms her from a dullard to a sword-wielding heroine in 0 to 60. There is no in between.

You can cast a more conventionally pretty actress and you do have someone more pleasant to look at for 2 hours. You can cast an actress with a more upbeat and cheerful persona (versus the more somber Stewart) and convince yourself that she embodies the character better. But at the end of the day, this interpretation of Snow White sucks on paper, no matter how you try and spin it.

There are few things as fetching as a bruised ego on a beautiful angel.

Ah, good point.

Snow White should have been better developed after she escapes into the forest.

Right again but I would much prefer a more attractive and less somber actress in the role.

So why exactly was Charlize so good? Exactly, out go your arguments. Kristen Stewart is a bland and one note actor, deal with it...

reply

A decent performance doesn't negate a bad script. And even the poorly written script gave Ravenna the more interesting arc over the film's protagonist.

And I never said Stewart was good. Rather that the script was bad that it didn't matter who got the role. This version of Snow White is written so dully and is weak in spirit. I think I articulated that clearly, unlike you who was looking to attack what you perceived as a praise towards Stewart (it wasn't).

I agree, the movie as written was about as good as it could be.
I liked kristen, as snow white, she seemed realistic, in a very unrealistic
movie.
This is the type movie that I would only watch one time, and it was kinda
childish and boring, but the whole snow white thing is not really movie
material.

I agree completely. In fact it was the only reason I came to the forum to see if anyone felt the same way I did. I have nothing against the actress, however she was the wrong choice for this role and this film. Looks-wise, she's gorgeous but too "haggard" and "chiseled". Those are cool looks for a more fierce and dark role, but not for this one. A softer, rounder and more innocent face type would have evoked much more empathy and emotion from the viewer. Also as beautiful as Kristen's eyes are, I cannot see the "soul" in them. They just seem dead for some reason. (and I actually have not seen her other work, this was the first footage I've seen of her acting). Acting-wise, she just seemed to be pushed along through the story without much to say. Even though she's doing things technically right, there is no true emotion or intensity in anything. She's just a pretty little thing to look at.

I don't blame the actress, I blame the director for choosing the wrong person for this film. Such a shame, this movie had a lot of potential to be great otherwise.

also Kristen Stewart always has that slack jawed look on her face.

@OP - she was the perfect cast IMO.

I am sure even justin bieber can do better job.

reply

I completely agree with you Choke on that and Andrea, while I don't think Kirsten was the right choice. it was not her fault that the movie sucked so poorly it was terribly written with poor dialogue and 0 character development. and a couple of flashy visuals aren't going to save the film

reply

Yes Stewart was miscast but the main problem with the film is the bad script and editing.

reply

Yeah. They COULD have done better. Look at all the actual BEAUTIFUL actresses they could have cast instead:

Dakota Fanning, Saoirse Ronan, Riley Keough, Alicia Vikander, Bella Heathcote, Selena Gomez, Emily Browning, Lily Collins and Felicity Jones were considered for the role of Snow White.

Exactly. She is ugly as hell next to Charlize. That mirror was smoking crack if it thought Kristen Stewart was better looking lol.
