Is there a lot of horror in this?

I've begun the process of finding horror movies to watch so when October hits, I got stuff to watch during Halloween month. I'm aware this is gothic, but everywhere I've seen, it doesn't specifically state this mainly as a horror. It's mostly labelled as a romance and fantasy. Would you say there are enough horror elements to make this good Halloween watching?

This movie is incredible and absolutely worth watching, but it's definitely not a horror movie. It's a very slow paced movie, and certainly not for everyone. There is no action in the movie at all. There was some action in an early cut, but the director was asked to add more and instead removed all of it. The film borrows elements of horror to tell a story about, love, loss, depression, and addiction.

I've heard good things about this, but do you think the mood itself is suitable as a Halloween movie?

reply

If you're looking for spooky or scary atmosphere for Halloween I would save this one for another night. I don't want to say too much, because there is definitely tension created from the unknown and the slow pace, but it's not scary at all and has zero action.

I found this movie so compelling and different though that I watched it twice over a weekend.

Sounds like I'll watch this in early October then. Thanks.

I think that's why some don't like it cause it's not a horror film. That's why it sticks out in the vampire genre as it's really a love story that has two vampires as the lovers. Like most Jarmusch films, it's very very slow.

I really like it, it's not top tier Jarmusch or anything. But Swinton and Hiddleston are a great leads and have great chemistry, even though Swinton is like 20 years older then him (she was 52 and Hiddleston 32 when this was made). But it never once came up as Swinton looks fantastic for her age. I love that Eve and Adam, never fall out or argue with one another. It's total love. Mia Wasikowska probably put in her best performance to date in this small role as Eve's vampire sister Ava. Great soundtrack too.

I don't think it's a Halloween film to be honest. It's a nice film to watch if you are just wanting a laid back film after watching all horror films.
