I was AMAZED at how much I disliked it...am I alone?

I like superhero movies; I like high-school dramas. I'm down with the found footage technique, though I think it's over-rated. I watched this film with a friend who has similar tastes. We kept cringing, and around the beer pong scene, were actually curling up on the couch in physical suffering over how much this movie sucked. I really feel like I'm close enough to the target demographic...although apparently I'm just getting out of touch.

It's like the screenwriters designed the characters--emo loser, philosophical type, and popular jock--and then hired whoever wrote the MTV remake of Skins to write all three of them. All three characters talked the same way, all the time. Matt's character in particular was the mostly poorly written "philosophical type" I've ever seen in a High School movie; he had no insights and could rarely form an articulate sentence. Andrew's character arc had some promise; his home life was genuinely disturbing, but having it end with him hurling school buses and patrol cars through the air was the ultimate cop-out to generic action, strangely anti-climactic amidst all of the effects.

In-as-much as the movie has a "message," it seems to be that if you're an abused, disturbed teenager, letting out your anger by killing hundreds of people doesn't make you a bad person because after all, you're an abused and disturbed teenager. Imagine this: a movie about one of the Columbine killers which ends with one of their friends in Tibet saying, "you're not a bad person. I'll do better. I'll help people..." Of course he's a bad person, and so is Andrew. The script is so under-baked when it comes to morality and motivation that it rams down our throats the idea that Andrew's actions are somehow inevitable and more his friends fault than his own, since they didn't love him in the way that he wanted.

Two scenes I liked: playing at the store with their powers (the shopping cart, etc.), and when Andrew beats up the bullies, there's a the moment when he's twirling their inert bodes, possible their corpses, around on the pavement, almost using their hair as paintbrushes to smear the blood on the street. Now THAT was compelling sh-t, most disturbing image in the movie by far.

I dunno...I guess the point of this post is to ask a simple question: Did anyone else just really basically hate the movie, mostly because of how annoying and one dimensional the characters were? Or am I just completely missing something?

reply

to be hones, I did not read your post, but can sure tell you that you are not alone.

reply

of course you are not!

the movie was total garbage, that's how I can put it into words.

reply

Why don't you speak for yourself rather than speaking for everyone. By the way, IMDB gave this film a 7.2, rotten tomatoes gave it a 85%, so it's a great movie!

reply

"By the way, IMDB gave this film a 7.2, rotten tomatoes gave it a 85%, so it's a great movie!"

- Why don't you speak for yourself rather than hiding behind IMDB and RT score?

reply

Because it got such high ratings, that's why! There's absolutely no flaws to this film, anyone who claims they disliked this film is obviously trolling.

reply

No flaws?

How about bad acting, ridiculous dialogue, the ending was cliched and made little sense, the message at the end is really ridiculous "you are still a good guy or smth". I don't really understand why they made a movie about guys that get super powers and mostly use it for stupid gags (except near the end) and not because they fear they get caught (they use them quite foolishly), at least make them do something!

Don't tell you would be able to fly and move things from a distance and changing your lame life would never cross your mind? No need for money? Adventures, girls, you wouldn't want to see the world?

Well your original post at least somewhat believable, but now you just went full retard. You are obviously trolling yourself, so stop accusing me. But just out of curiosity I'll answer your "questions":

"Andrew's acting was bad?" - It was, not terrible but bad.

"If the acting was bad do you honestly think this film would've got such high hits?" - Yes I do, rating don't mean the movie is any good.

"You didn't feel for him?" - No I did not, if he wasn't such an idiot maybe I would have.

"The ending?" - You mean the worst part of this terrible film?

"Okay now you're just *beep* with me, right?" - I thing you are the one who's *beep* with everyone, the movie was bad, you have the right to like it but call me an idiot because I don't is rather too much even for a troll like you.

You haven't seen a better ending than this? - sad.

reply

"Yes I do, rating don't mean the movie is any good."

Yes it does!

" It was, not terrible but bad."

No it was fantastic, probably the best teenage acting I've ever seen. If you don't think it was then I'm sad to tell you that you've probably haven't seen too many films.

"No I did not, if he wasn't such an idiot maybe I would have."

He was being bullied by other students, like the club scene. His father treated him horribly! Maybe he went too far, but is that all you can say? Really?

"You mean the worst part of this terrible film?"

The perfect example of a troll remark.

"I thing you are the one who's *beep* with everyone, the movie was bad, you have the right to like it but call me an idiot because I don't is rather too much even for a troll like you."

And idiots such as yourself don't know what real entertainment is- sad

hehe, you are a retard.

reply

Huh? Whatever dude, the argument was already over.

reply

The movie really wasn't that good dude.

HELLO! My name in Inigo Montoya. You killed my father, prepare to die!

reply

Oh you finally replied. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go enjoy this movie for the 99th time.

reply

K kugelis, I agree with you. Didn't like the movie to the point that I stopped watching halfway through and sent it back to Blockbuster. The only reason I rented it in the first place was because of the premise, but they just didn't do anything with it IMO.

reply

I'm guessing you've never tried acting.. the acting in this movie was very solid. It is a difficult craft.. Actual bad acting is easy to find on D-list horror and porn

reply

As much as I disagree with you (I also disagree with AnimeLover how you're trolling because you have your own opinion) you can't deny it was impressively shot, the way all the scenes came about, that was my favourite part of the film

I also like the ingenuity, I've never imagined telekenesis being that awesome as a power, I mean flying? Never thought that'd happen but makes sense haha

reply

If a bunch of "bros" suddenly had the power to do stuff with their minds, this movie to me seems to exemplify perfectly how they would employ them.

Look at the things that are most important to them: Steve wants to be class president. Matt wants his idealized girlfriend. Andrew wants to wall himself off from the life imposed on him. Those motivations didn't change when they got powers, any more than if they had gotten their own car, or won a $10,000 lottery; it only enhanced their methods for chasing them.

They talked about doing all those other things, but again, compare that with how people behave in real life: how often do people have a chance to reach for something truly greater, but pass in favor of remaining in their comfort zone, perhaps with some minor enhancements. More often than we care to admit, I think. And on a smaller scale, Steve did have the idea to use the powers to give Andrew social standing, but it backfired and things were worse for him than before.

reply

I love this movie, but please stop calling people trolls for disagreeing.

Don't mistake hate speech for free speech. Remember, hate speech kills!

reply

You literally JUST SAID that he shouldn't speak for everyone.
I like this movie too, a lot, but that was awful.

reply

Again, I love this movie, but don't base your dis/liking of ANY movie on ratings other than your own.

Don't mistake hate speech for free speech. Remember, hate speech kills!

reply

Plus you act like IMDb is some kind of movie authority. It's made up of votes from plenty of imbeciles like you.

reply

I think it was better than over hyped the avengers

i'll be back

reply

who ha two thumbs and has good taste in films? the guy im responding to.

reply

Well, the message, I imagine, they're trying to illustrate is more of "weak and abused people when given power do bad things"... seems to be the main motive in the movie to me. For this reason the movies was 100% predictable to me. did they cope with conveying the message? I think so. Did they manage to convey anything else meaningful? I didn't think so. It kind of deserves a compliment for sticking with this more adult idea, but falls short with adding more to it.

reply

Very well said... I can't say it any better.

reply

You're not alone, many people out there disliked this piece of garbage...

PS : Never seen people as stupid as those in the movie; having all this power and doing nothing with it, just plain dumb...worst so-called "super hero" movie ever.

reply

the script was pen by a number of zoo animals, made NO SENSE AT ALL, I mean they have superpowers right?? why going on a killing spree for 700 dollars???

reply

You are not alone . This movie is pathetic. Weak story line, one dimensional characters, no decent dialog, scenes that go nowhere, cheasy acting, predictable moments, no character development whatsoever , no sense in anything this list can go on and on and on......... Please people do yourself favor and if you are not 15 year teenager - do not watch this movie.

reply

No decent dialogue? No character development? Either your talking about a different movie or you were high as *beep* when you saw it.

reply

To buy medication for his sick mother. How you missed that is beyond me!

reply

I decided to watch it considering the somewhat good reviews it received. With that being said, I was disappointed with the film. I understand about his mother but the film doesn't really explain why he flipped out that much. I was ok with it until he started attacking innocent people (up until then he only attacked people that picked on him).

reply

The way I watched the movie was as if it was real. I thought the movie conveyed Andrew's disturbed state of mind quite clearly. He's been suffering abuse from home and school, and even walking down the street. He's been mostly alone throughout his life. His mother is dying. He believes he is worthless (like when he says he has no talents).
It's understandable that he'd be driven to a dark place. I had hoped that he'd recovered a bit with the influence of Matt and Steve (mostly Steve, he was a pretty awesome friend to him) but it didn't happen - and I can see that happening in reality as well.

reply

> made NO SENSE AT ALL, I mean they have superpowers right?? why going on a killing spree for 700 dollars???

Because they are stupid kids who don't fully understand the concepts of right and wrong.

I mean, most adults have been around the block a few times and seen enough sci-fi movies to realize that if you suddenly gained superpowers, the most important thing to do is keep it secret. The instant you let anyone know about it, the secret government agents come looking for you. And so does the media and everyone else in the world who wants you to help them do something.

reply

Also because those kids constantly harassed and bullied him, and after turning on his father, he wanted to lash out at everyone who had ever picked on him.

reply

I liked the film a lot, but I agree with what you are saying. Why the hell didn't he just steal the medicine without anyone noticing it??? I mean, it's just a little box! surely he could've just made it float while nobody was looking.

reply

The medicine wasn't there - it had to be ordered/delivered. The clerk says so. Otherwise he would've just taken it.

I was expecting it to be much worse. It was actually a nice surprise for me. I compare this movie to The Covenant, that´s what i was expecting and it is much better.

reply

I am a very jaded viewer these days....But man, I just finished watching this and can't wait to go buy the DVD. I absolutely LOVED this movie! I knew there would be 'worst movie ever' posts and what not in which I SMH. I'd love to see ppl who complain about movies make a better one.

'Don't let me die with that silly look in my eyes.'

reply

[deleted]

Because it was excellent? I'd probably say that's why.

I understand why a lot of people don't like this movie. For me it was a dark, disturbing tale of power gone awry. Great little details and a full-on tragedy. Loved it.

If this is some of the worst, you obviously don't see a lot of smaller, low-budget movies.

This is not a Hollywood blockbuster.

reply

Agreed.. there is far far worse out there.. its laughable to say worst.movie.ever in this scenario

reply

Questions like "am I alone" are unnecessary, if they aren't rhetorical. Regardless of what views you hold, you are never alone.

That said, people who loved the movie and would feel that you haven't understood it, are in larger numbers. I'm one of them.

reply

I loved the film. Can't see how anyone could dislike it, but vive le difference eh?

reply

I'm sure just as many other people dislike it in very large numbers, way to make your audience some more numerous though.

reply

No, you're not alone. I also found this film very disappointing. From the majority of reviews, I expected a film that would actually make a statement in the end. It wasn't the underdeveloped characters that bothered me, although that was certainly a factor in how this film could have been better. What really killed this film for me was how inarticulate the conclusion was. I expected the final scene to have some emotional punch. It didn't. I thought to myself, "I watched this crap just to hear that?" This genre could definitely produce something more powerful one day, but this particular film can only be called a misfire.
