Andrew Detmer: The Ultimate Sympathetic Villain

Okay, we've seen our share of sympathetic villains, but Andrew Detmer takes the cake. I honestly related to him, his loneliness, his teenage angst, everything. In my honest opinion, he's the ultimate sympathetic villain.

Frankly i had no Sympathy for him. Yeah he was abused. But the movie makes it pretty obvious that he had no sympathy for others. When he didn't care about the driver of the Truck. Then he became a one dimensional characters and he became more cliched as the movie progressed. The was no scene that showed him in a remotely emotional light about his abuse. He never talks about it to anyone. In fact all the characters acted like such Jackasses. I didn't care about any of them. Including Andrew.

I don't know if I would consider him sympathetic. He killed people that he didn't even know. But I could understand his actions. He should have killed his father in a way no one could have stopped it. If anyone, his father deserved to die. After years of being put down, beat on, treated like crap, you couldn't see it but he had so much anger in him for the people who hurt him but also anger against himself for not being able to change or defend himself. Powers or not, he was on a path of self destruction, hurting anyone who stood in his way. And the only way he'd ever feel at peace was to not be himself anymore.

I was with Andrew all the way until he snapped and decided to go on a killing spree. This movie is basically a school shooting with powers. Bullied kid gets bullied too far and decides to start torturing animals, attacking with force and ultimately become far worse than the bullies ever were.

Switch telekinesis with "gun" and you've got yourself genuine American tragedy.
