Congratulations Bernie!

Bernie has been released from prison after his life sentence has been reduced to time served. I know he killed someone but. (Scottish accent) He's not an evil man. If you can believe that, then it's a start

And he will be living in Richard Linklater's garage apartment. Sometimes truth IS stranger than fiction. Congrats, Bernie!

Richard Linklater is such an awesome person. If there is a heaven he is going there!

It's not quite a done deal, but probably.
Panola County judge recommended that his life sentence be reduced to time served and that he be released on $10,000 bond pending appellate court approval.

This is one news story that I'm glad to see! I'm so happy for Bernie and I wish him all the best! There are people way more dangerous than him out there!

reply

He shouldn't have been released, this is a miscarriage of justice.

It's b.s. that sexual abuse made him turn out to be a cold, calculating murderer. Many people are abused and never do anything so heinous.

Linklater should be ashamed of himself, this is the West Memphis 3 all over again.

Liberal Hollywood is constantly getting cold-blooded killers off the hook.

But it was not a cold calculating murder - he snapped. Not premeditated.

Are you some kind of creep?

I guess as long as you're a beloved funeral director and bring baked goodies to widows and like to sing in your town's musicals it's perfectly acceptable to kill someone. Some of you are really sick lol

He had other options. He could have just told her to f off. All he had to do was leave. But yea, poor Bernie. He's a modern day hero.

How is it ever okay to shoot someone because they've gotten on your nerves for too long? Face it, the abuse thing was a bs excuse. All it was ever about was killing her off to get her money.

reply

I don't think anyone is praising him as a modern day hero. :)

But the four purposes of prison are: punishment, deterrence, incapacitation and rehabilitation. Bernie's not really a candidate for three of those--society isn't "safer" if he's locked away because he wasn't a danger to the general population beforehand and it's highly unlikely he'll kill someone else in the future. So the question boils down to whether 15 years is sufficient punishment for his action.

Looks like the answer depends on which version of the circumstances you believe. Did he lose control of himself for 5 seconds and pay for it with 15 years of his life? Or did he plan to murder a woman in cold blood so he could enjoy her money? I have no idea.

For me, I think he deserved to go to prison. But I'm not too bothered by his parole. I'm more worried about the guys who can't wait to pick up where they left off with the rape, torture and murder.

WTF? If anyone needs to know the clear definition of what it means to talk out of your A S S you need look no further than the above.

I love Linklater but I too don't understand how this is being allowed or even how the director himself is in support of this.. the circumstances leading up to the murder are real and troubling I am sure, but even as the movie indicates, Bernie does nothing to simply leave the situation besides driving out of her gate and then having it close on him BIG DEAL! He is blinded by wanting to help people and make them feel better about themselves but when its being done to this extent there is simply no reason for me to believe he didnt have the wherewithal that he needed out of her life or at least have the ability to create some type of boundaries... so he succumbs to the deep seated depression and murders her.. that should be a life sentence

like I said I love Linklater, this movie, especially his other movies... but how can we be supportive of this lunatic? hes mentally scared obviously but since when does killing people only send you to jail for like 15 years.. O and now you can go live with a real-life artist and hero in Linklater? just ridiculous and like someone else said, unjust..

Goodness gracious, people! Do you realize "Bernie" is NOT a biopic and we only know the killer's side of the story, right?

Good 'ol Bernie murder an elderly lady he can't get away from BECAUSE HE DIDN'T WANT TO PART WITH HER MONEY. The "snapped for a sec" defense falls the minute you know he kept on merrily living his life while her corpse remained hidden in a freezer for NINE months. Stop white knighting for a guy that could have very well killed your granny. This woman had a family, it's disguting.

You gotta love a country where a killer gold digger gets to walks free while the guy from "I Love You Phillip Morris" spends a life sentence in isolation because of money fraud.

reply

Wrong. He was Re-tried by a different jury and sentenced to 99 years to life. Guess he wasn't all that lovable after all.
