EP 11: Mickey 'raping' Eva. WTF?

Firstly, I really like the entire show.

I actually think this was a fantastic episode, one of the best. It was Such a dramatic interpretation and exploration of some of the more desperate characters that have been so entertaining throughout the entire series.

BUT

The scene where Mickey, after murdering his cousin, has the need to 'rape' / emote through sex, with Eva was just not in par with the feeling of the rest of the episode.

It doesn't make sense to me that someone so engulfed with guilt / remorse would feel the need to release his emotions through sex. I would actually make the argument, through my own personal experience in this type of scenario, even being able to get an erection would be nearly impossible.

A small blight on an otherwise very, very good episode.

Someone please explain this to me for I would love to understand and appreciate this episode even more if I could.

Yeah in tv series men tend to relieve there sorrow through sex.. Lol

Yeah, the moment actually felt pretty true to me. I don't think it's just taking out aggression, though. I think it's also a strange attempt at closeness with another person.

I think a lot of pent-up romantic feelings he had for Eva came rushing out at that moment.

Rape is a serious crime. Don't use this word for consensual rough sex.

Exept of course if you think that every intercourse is some kind of rape (thanks Dworkin)

I didn't whom you were referring to, so I googled "Dworkin."

Good Lord! That woman was the size of a small mountain and was ugly as six-day old sin. Damn!

reply

I think what he is saying is "I just killed my cousin, I have no limits. Now I will take you too".

He is feeling pretty damn powerful.

Sometimes a movie or tv show plot is so stupid that only the stupid can understand it.

I think he was confessing, to Eva. A good Catholic always needs to confess. I think he needed to have sex. Needed to have something that felt good to release his tension, anger, stress from a very bad experience. And she knew it. She came back to him, offered herself to him, but in the end, she made sure he was looking in her eyes. Made sure he knew who and what he was doing. That there was a real person here, not just a "whore", and not just a "fix".

I see the significance for Mickey of these events and his confession as the ending of the past. Cutting ties to the past, to Ireland, to his family. And a new beginning and a commitment to the future.

reply

Yeah Mickey did kill his brother a couple of seasons back and now he killed the cousin (who in my opinion REALLY deserved to die anyway). I was glad Eva kind of took control making sure he looked in her eyes while they did the deed so he could see she wasn't a whore nor a fix as the post above me said..

*** Also isn't Mickey (this is in the beginning of the series), I remember the brother (damn forgot his name) was always worried that Mickey would kill another woman b/c he had "problems w/his temper" when he was w/women sometimes- damn he may have killed at least 2 women.. I forget its been so long but I remember something w/Mickey being brutal towards women. Anyone remember this and his brother's name (he liked the church lady) at one time. Maybe he was the one who had problems w/hurting women but I know it was one of the brothers. Thanks any help, my memory is horrible.

reply

Both brothers each claimed separately that the OTHER ONE was the deranged killer that killed the women in Boston. It hasn't been revealed yet which one was/is the psycho.

reply

I always thought Sean was 'the psycho' brother.

reply

Sean was his brother's name.

reply

Did Eva even say no or stop? I did however hate the scene on an otherwise good episode.

Thats a clown question , BRO.......

CLOSE the FRIGGEN BORDER ALREADY!!!

reply

Eva completely pushed him away about 5 minutes before, so without an explanation to the contrary that she changed her mind for some reason, I would take that as a pretty clear "no". I also remember Mickey getting ultra creepy and trying to get with Eva after she got either raped, almost raped, or beat up by someone else in s4 and she went off on him then as well. I think it was an episode or two after the whole Elam thing. (Elam was the best :( )

That whole scene was amazing acting, and way more complex than people keep on describing it in this thread.

He's basically having a mental breakdown after he had to kill Shea, yet another family member, then he tries to have sex with Eva.
She resists, and he stops, and crumbles to even more of a mess constantly apologizing for what just happened.

In that moment Eva realizes that she was the one suggesting to kill Shea in the very first place, and back then Mickey was completely against it, so she most likely felt responsible for what happened or maybe she just had compassion with Mickey, so she gives him the "go ahead".

That is how I understood the scene and, like you said, it was amazing acting and very insightful for these 2 characters.

I also felt it was out of place and was done for the ratings as was Cullen with Mei after he worked with the nitro and faced danger so......gotta have sex

Lots of out-of-place sex taking place in this series. The most puzzling part, to me, was when Cullen slept with that Mormon's daughter. No build-up whatsoever: suddenly we are treated to a scene where Cullen, a guest in their house and needing to be on good terms with them, is caught having sex with her. Utterly ridiculous. I guess they were already then planning for the subsequent Mormon adventure, but they could at least have made an effort to make it believable.

This is not a show of great build-ups. In the best case it manages to cash in on the fallout of random events, but after season 2 everything just seems to happen. If a character is needed, it just gets put in there. If a motivation is needed, it pops out of nowhere. The writing of this show was hardly above average.
