Did The Comics Have Any "Prequel" Material?

Reading this just now and there are a few points were they seem to be referencing past events.

Does anyone know if this is just because we're in the world of an already established Superman, and the writer just wanted to seed that by giving hints at past adventures, or did this comic series follow on timeline wise from some other work?

I'm not the biggest fan of ASS (... seriously?), but I have read it (and seen the movie) and I don't remember any official prequel material. I think Morrison just wrote it as a love-letter to the character and his general comics history.
