I'm I the only one who didn't really like it?

I watched this movie yesterday, not having heard anything about it. As with all movies, I kept my expectations in check, because it could go either way. There were good parts, for sure. However, the movie felt like a disjointed mess. The script seemed like it needed a lot of work, and the actor who voiced superman was just didn't into the role.

One thing I must say, though, is that I loved Luther in this movie. He was given the best lines, and they were delivered brilliantly. I did not read the comic/comics that this was adapted from, so I'm only going by the movie on its own merit. Sadly, I just wasn't feeling it. I'm just posting this, because I come here, and seen all of the high praise. Am I missing something here? And "best DC Animated film ever", I asked myself, did we watch the same movie?

I'm not trying to belittle anyone's opinion, I just wanted to know if anyone felt similar to myself about this movie.

I agree with everything you said. Its not bad like Doomsday or Gotham Knight but its just a very basic flat story.I will say I actually liked the last 10 minutes or so since they fixed the problems the comic had.It wasn't their best but also not their worst

I just finished watching it and I didnt think it was good at all. The story left kinda all over the place to me, like it was rushing through plots that needed a little more time to flesh them out.

reply

I feel that's your problem(or maybe their problem). Its made for fans of the All Star comic. They can seem rushed before in the comic they jump through stories that would probably make for movies in their own right.

You guys got yours on torrents or anything? Or early released copies.

It was just plain bad. The worst I've watched so far(and I think I've not missed one of the DC new releases).

You really think it was worse then Doomsday or Gotham Knight?

Well, I do consider Gotham Knight a piece of art. I really enjoyed it a lot. Now, Doomsday... *sigh* where to begin? I own most of the comics related to that storyline (special editions, unopened bags, etc.) So, I cannot express how disappointed I was with that movie (specially since the first 30 mins are just mind blowing!). Regarding SAS, it was just painful to watch. I finished it simply 'cuz I am a huge Superman fan (that, and I didn't have the energy to get up and press the stop button hehehe).

I found this flat out boring(maybe because I didn't read the comic.) Its a shame because I love most things Superman and these DC animated movies have almost all been great. There was also like no action which really turned me off. I felt like a was watching an animated Superman Returnes or something. The new animated Green Lantern feature should be good though.

Edit: I should note that there are spoilers...

I just watched this today and didn't like it either. As others have said, the story is all over the place. At one point Superman has to battle fellow Kryptonians he had hoped would take his place and before that you had awkward and frankly creepy scenes when Superman reveals his secret to Lois and takes her to the Fortress. While there, she then becomes paranoid because of a malfunction of one of the robots? I realize this comes back later (if I understand it correctly), but the whole scene was just weird.

Then you add the voice talents and James Denton was all around flat in his delivery from beginning to end. No inflection or emotion behind it at all and that only took me out of the film to care about him. I will say Anthony LaPaglia was good voicing Lex Luthor and seems to be the only one who brought his A-game to the voice performance. He's not any better than Luthor's other incarnations but I thought he was menacing enough to actually be a viable threat.

The movie as a whole is OK with redemption for the final 10-minutes or so but I was pretty disappointed. It's down there with Gotham Knights and Doomsday.

i agree with you 100%. i just saw it and was very disappointed. apparently it was great, if you read the comic first. if the comics were great, then the crew who adapted this did a lousy job. i didn't get where the kandorians came from ...or why? they didn't really move the story along. i felt like that about most of the sub-plots. although, the luthor stuff was pretty good.

there seem to be alot of people who read the series and love this movie. it's just my opinion that a good adaptation should be able to stand on its own. i didn't completely hate it, i just wouldn't recommend it.

reply

The problem isn't the screenplay but the comic itself. The comic's writer Grant Morrison always writes paper thin plots and drags the premise along for more too many issues filling the space with various sub plots and tangents that don't resolve for several more issues or sometimes never at all.

Over the past couple of years hi has been ruining Batman with the whole RIP crap. I can't wait till he leaves that series.

I haven't read a Grant Morrison-written issue in years because I can't stand how he rapes characters like Batman & Superman. That being said, I'm not a Frank Quitely fan either in which the animated designs for this movie are based on. He draws some of the ugliest characters today; I haven't forgotten what he did to X-Men some time back.

I tried to give the mag a chance some years back but it just wasn't for me. Since I never finished the story arc, I decided to check out the film just for how it concludes. The movie wasn't terrible but I didn't like it much. I found Gotham Knight much more engaging than this drivel and I don't even rank that Bruce Timm endeavor very high at all.

I give this film a big "meh".

Evil finally escaped Jordan's sight. It hid inside him.

I didn't care for it either.....like others have said here, it jumps around too much. Seriously....(SPOILERS!)

there was like 5 minutes where two other survivors of Krypton show up and they're gone as soon as they arrive on screen. C'mon.....why even bother then!?!? They had almost no bearing on the plot. Then Solaris shows up for another hot-5 minutes and is defeated.....this whole plot felt lame. It's not my least fave comic animated movie, but it's not in the top area either.

reply

Well, unlike everyone else who posted in this thread, I really liked it. There were a few parts that were "odd", but overall, I felt it was a good standalone movie.

The plot was incredibly disjointed, but unlike y'all, I thought that was a good thing. While most Superman stories seek to bring him down to our level, this one elevated him far, far above us. The tiny subplots flew fast and thick because that's how Superman lives. Things keep happening to him, and it never stops. As soon as he deals, he moves to the next thing.

i just watched it twice just to get the story line and im like what im lost i dont get the ending and it seem to jump all over

I didn't care for it either. To me it seemed like someone found a book full of ideas for episodes of a Superman cartoon and put them all together into 1 movie. I was lost for the most part because it didn't seem like any of the ideas meshed well with each other.

Spoilers Ahead:

I agree that this movie was totally disjointed and didn't make a whole lot of sense. There was absolotuely no point in having the surviving Kryptonians come back for a measely 10 minutes of air time. You had Parasite raging how powerful he sensed Clark Kent was, and Luthor standing right next to him. Superman is using his powers, creates and earthquake, and Luthor can't figure it out. That makes no sense. There was no build up to Clark revealing he is Superman to Lois. No emotion whatsoever in the whole movie. Granted, I have not read the comics for this series, but I watch Superman so I can see him kick some butt. The fact that you had the most powerful incarnation of him, and hardly even get to see his powers through most of the film seems like a wasted opportunity. Also those time travellers with there abslolutely cheese lines one after another trying to "win" Lois, who now has superpowers as well, just drove me crazy. Also the final fight scene with Luthor was another wasted opportunity. Instead of having Superman and Luthor duke it out for a whole 24 hours until the serum of whatever wore off, you have Superman shortening the time Luthor has superpowers by using a gravity gun. Ugh. I am totally disappointed, especially since I heard that this was a great movie. 4 out of 10, and I feel like I was generous. I bought the dvd, but I will never again watch this movie.

reply

I think it was crap. It was very rushed didn't make alot of sense. When Superman made the "Superdrug" that he gave to Lois he said it took him awhile just to make it for her. So Lex gets it and barley any time at all he can use it for himself bah! I love watching these movies and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Bring on a Justice League Unlimited movie and there we go. That will make me and alot of other people happy end of story.
