Is DM2 anti-Hispanic?

Full disclosure: I'm a Catholic priest who writes a blog about movies and works in a parish where about 75% of the kids are Hispanic. I also loved the first Despicable Me and TRIED REALLY HARD TO LIKE DM2.

And there's much to like. The minions and the three little girls that Gru's taking care of are really really cute. The addition of the Kristen Wiig character is also good.

But (SPOILERS) ...

At the end of the day, the two villains in the movie are (IMHO NEEDLESSLY) identified as Mexican.

Okay, "El Macho" is kind of a villain of Gru's caliber (and Gru has a "East Europeanish" accent as well...). So one COULD perhaps lump "El Macho" and "Gru" together. And Gru's of course the hero/anti-hero of the whole franchise.

HOWEVER, the film makes a gratuitously nasty comment about the grooming habits of "El Macho" that's going to stick with people (and one would think is actually false ... I haven't exactly known Mexicans to be particularly "hairy"...)

FURTHER, the film gratuitously has "El Macho's" son play a "latin lover" where he first woos the oldest of the three girls that Gru's taking care of AND THEN FOR NO REASON (other than perhaps that "he's a Latin Lover/Mexican...") HE DUMPS HER.

NEITHER ONE OF THESE STUPID INSERTIONS serve a purpose in the film other than suggest that older latin men are "unclean" and younger latin men are not to be trusted.

Now put yourselves in my place. How am I supposed to recommend this film to the Hispanic families (and their kids) in my parish??

Your post makes complete sense, because everyone knows the whole "latin lover" thing is a myth.
And according to your shallow interpretation, no Mexican could ever have a successful restaurant or be remotely smart enough to be a super-villain.
If you are a priest, I'm sure your take on the scriptures is equally insulting.

Grow up.

Latinos got represented and full blown speaking roles and plot presence.

Notice any Black Americans who spoke or took any action to further the plot? 400 years in America but still struggling to get a part in a major movie in 2013.

Gru could have at least had a date with a Black woman. One of the other suspects could have been Black...

Full disclosure: I'm an atheist who has no respect for people of false authority. And above all, I'm highly intolerant for people asking idiotic questions.

As a Catholic, you are programmed to see hate everywhere. Only a Catholic (let alone a Bible extremist such as a priest for that matter) would take a funny animated and turn it into a political or racist propaganda. If the bad guy was American, you would say "the film is unpatriotic". Russian? Anti-Russian. In that case, let's stop with the villains and start watching My little Pony! Although there are villains in that cartoon, too! And that's anti-horsey!

Now put yourselves in my place. How am I supposed to recommend this film to the Hispanic families (and their kids) in my parish??

Now who's the racist here? Just because your parishioners are Hispanic, this doesn't mean they are stupid. Because only truly stupid people would take advice on movie watching from a priest.

The only thing we agree on.

Well people complain about Hollywood whitewashing movies and when they finally drop in other ethnicities people complain about that too. Its frustrating. I honestly didn't think it was racist or bad. They had a white villain which was Gru and now they have a Mexican villain. I enjoyed seeing another ethnicity in the movie. They expanded and lets face it, there are good and bad people in every ethnicity. Well... They kind of expanded. Its still very much European based.

I never got the impression he was being a dirty or unhygienic person just so macho and tough that he would give Chuck Norris a run for his money. I actually thought he had so much charisma and character that I liked him more than the first villain. the only negative thing about him was that he was the actual villain but he seemed pretty awesome otherwise.

The son was also charming and a threat to Gru not because he was mexican but because he was a smooth operator and putting the moves on his daughter. Gru was being overprotective and in the end when his daughter was dumped he took action because his daughter was hurting inside.

I think most of the characters was a bit stereotypical and over the top but not ani.

You can have the kids watch it and enjoy it for what it is. If they have any questions after you can answer it for them. Odds are they will just want to talk about how fun the minions were.
