The cinematographers shoot all the footage, the sound guys do the sound, the editors put the movie together, the actors perform it, the lighting people do the lighting... They literally did everything, as in literally the entire movie.

There's any number of ways a single scene can be edited, and the director gives instruction as to how this will be carried out. Actors follow direction - if you read a film script, you might imagine the actors performing it in a different way to how it ends up. The director will tell the actors how to deliver the lines, what moods to convey, etc. Lighting people follow direction too - it might be moodlit, or floodlit, the director will decide, and the lighting operatives will set the lights up to match the scene the director wants to make.
In scifi and fantasy films, the director will also approve the various creature designs. The Orcs in Lord of the Rings could have looked like nearly anything, but Peter Jackson gave the designers intructions, and gave his thumbs up to the exact design they came up.
This is why films by certain directions (Del Toro, Tim Burton) have a certain "look", where if you saw a few minutes of one of their films without knowing who it's by, you could probably guess.
id say only the post was a let down , Lincoln , bridge of spies and BFG were all pretty good and ready player one was fantastic
