The mechanics of the virtual world really bothers me

I have not read the book and have only seen the trailer, but here is what bothers me about movies such as this.

There is a virtual world into which they enter and seem to be able to experience with full sensory input. The Matrix did it the best in my opinion, since you plug into the virtual world and accordingly your brain is fooled into experiencing all sensory inputs. You can feel as though you are falling, jumping, swimming etc.

However, when you are accessing it through VR glasses, you are literally just playing a game like with a VR headset, and the manner in which the immersion and interaction with the virtual world is depicted makes no sense to me.

It would have been much cooler if it was a matrix-like interface, meaning that you could ACTUALLY have a virtual world to engage with all of your senses and thus having complete immersion.

I do not know how this movie will handle it, but looking at the trailer makes me think it will be pretty much how I assumed above.

Edit: Just cleaned up a sentence

The trailer has tricked you then. They do not have full sensory perception, only the visuals. In fact they specifically show the main character purchase an expensive suit for touch sensory replication which is later used as a plot device in the finale as well.

Unfortunatelly Matrix-like Mind-lash device would likely be extremely intrusive and will not be home-available, let alone easily accessible to poor people any time soon. At least not until neutral implanting is ubiquitous, if ever.

The VR glasses is just a plot device for hooking into the game though, i dont think they were meant to be taken literally. They even seem to become see-through into the real world whenever plot demands it so they are disposable plot devices.

After seeing it, I also had questions about how it worked, though not quite the same. I understand the concept of the interface they are using with the tactile suites and the omni directional treadmills. The question I had was how does that work in the Oasis world where we see them doing things like jumping, flying kicks, etc. Those types of moves could not be done on a treadmill.

They evidently used more than a headset in Ready Player One; the trailers alone provided that information.

But still not convincing enough, eh? Well, either way, similar VR to RPO has been used in countless shows and movies over the years (fiction says a simple, albeit extravagant pair of VR headsets can transport you into a whole other world where you can do almost anything).

So, it doesn’t bother me. I just roll with it, especially when it comes to a sci-fi movie. Suspension of disbelief ftw!
