No true lover of Boorman's Excalibur can take this seriously.

Right? I mean... Come on.

Well, they've managed to avoid Vagnerian "Bom bom bom bom bommmmm". Though Fienne's lack of hair really irks me; at least he should wear *something on top.

p.s. I give first round to Morgana

reply

Seriously. they turned it into a lifetime tween movie.

LOL! Excalibur isn't exactly a paragon of perfection. I HATE giggling little golden Mordred, and it's just a campfest. I don't think the two can be compared at all, and neither is, well, a GOOD King Arthur movie/show. A good King Arthur movie/show seems as unattainable as the Holy Grail (Monty Python gets more right about KA than any other!).

No true lover of Arthurian legend can take this seriously. I mean, I'm disgusted by it. How on earth, and why on earth, could you make King Arthur such an un-noble, and unlikeable character? There is nothing redeemable about him, and the same goes for this depiction of Merlin. I'm not criticizing the actors, they're very good, but the way they've been written. I don't belive Chris Chibnell, or anyone behind this show, has read any Arthurian sources. I've studied medieval English, read the lays, and I don't see what they're basing these characterization on. Whatever it is, it's not anything Arthurian.

Arthur is supposed to mean a man of ideals and absolute loyalties, that's part of what leads to his tragedy, that he equally loves Guinevere and Lancelot, that he hopes for and tries to forge a better world and hopes that Mordred can come to his side. My mom had a really good point about this show, that there can't be any heroes today, we try to tear everyone down.

what sword was broke during his practice? was that the one he pulled on the falls?

reply

Yes rustynail, the sword that broke in half was the one pulled from the rock.

The sword Gawain breaks? It's just a sword Arthur has been carrying around with him, not the one from the stone.

What did he do with the "Sword of the Gods" ....hang it on the wall over the fireplace? Actually I did see similarities to Excalibur in that it was about peoples lust and dark emotions screwing up any chance of making a better world. Yes...there truly can be no heroes because the things we collectively value are contradictory. This series is fine though I've never been a fan of the feminism 101 obsession that it chooses to take. I don't want to like Morgan, but the series seems to WANT me to like her for her strength and independence. In my opinion, however this series blows away Merlin with its Harry Potter magic and childish talking dragon.

Shut up...

No...can't leave it at that...

Any true fan of Arthurian fiction will know that there is, by necessity, room for wildly different interpetations of the tales...Excalibur was great, but this show had a lot of potential...and the considerable advantage of the TV format allows for us to really sink our teeth into it.

I'm only 3 episodes in, but I'm really enjoying the show so far

Love "Excalibur", but I love this version just as much. It's a more, how should I say it, "up-to-date" version of Camelot (not counting BBC's Merlin, which I really enjoy, but not directly based on the Arthur legends). I'm still waiting on the reboot/remake of "Excalibur". Yeah I hate remakes just as much as the next guy, but Excalibur could use it.
