Did this really get cancelled because of the leads leaving?

I just read that this show was cancelled because of the 3 main leads saying they had schedule conflicts for season 2 and couldn't free up time. Seriously??? I just watched the first episode and it seemed like a good show. Is this really true? or did this show just end up sucking at the end of the first season? If it's true, then these actors are on my don't watch list from now on. Shameful.

camelot started out good but went no where.

Saw this on Netflix, I finished 1 episode and couldn't go no further. Seeing the names Eva Greene and Joseph Fiennes really peaked my interest when I decided to watch the show, but the casting of Arthur was such a big ruiner that Fiennes and Greene can't even save it for me.

And it's a pity because I really liked Greene's rendition of an antagonist, but Arthur... the acting, the character, everything just seemed wrong and painful to watch.

Last 2 shows I've watched with joseph fineness have been axed - Flash Forward and now this one. He really knows how to pick losers. He's a fine actor but don't bet on him again. Honestly, I think the actor that played Arthur here was just out of his league.

I agree. For which I blame the casting and the directing. I have nothing against the way the character was thought up to begin with (young, out of his depth, far form perfect, needing to learn everything about becoming a king from scrap...) but the fact that the character ended up unappealing, if not boring, is only partly the actor's fault. Many of his lines made me think "they should have reshot that, that sounded bad."

"Occasionally I'm callous and strange."

@Pol-edra: I completely agree with your assessment below - I think you nailed it. Nigel Terry from the movie Excalibur was the exact opposite - he played a naive boy in the beginning of the movie, but graduated to kingship at the end. You could see the change in maturity, and it went beyond just having a beard. With this guy in Camelot, I could never see him getting out of the boy role, even if he grew a beard. I expected that in season 5 he would still look and act the same.

Yes thats why 100%
For example.......
Winchester left before season 1 filming was done to do Strike/Back
Bower left immediately (likie the same day) after filming ended to do Twilight

Oh behold the warrior who does not respect his enemy - Sun Tzu

I think Eva Green nude was memorable. I could use more of that in my life.

The guy who played Merlin was pretty cool too, I think he pulled it off.

Other than that...the show didn't hold a candle to The Tudors or Game of Thrones. It had potential, but not the actors or the audience to keep going.

I've been waiting, patiently, for Season 2 of Camelot for some time. Yeah, Bower wasn't much of an Arthur, but Eva Green more than made of for it with her Morgana, I thought (way better than Katie McGrath on the cable show "Merlin," and Katie's not half bad). And Fiennes was the most "interesting" turn on Merlin I've ever seen.

I've been watching other shows on Starz, Showtime, Cinemax, HBO... but I finally went to their website and it didn't show as one of their shows any more (although if you do a search for it, they still have a page for it and it's still doing fairly heavy rotation on some of their channels).

Oh well. I've said what I needed to... time to go watch my most recent DVRing of "Spartacus," which I haven't gotten to until today.

I gotta say that I found the whole thing very dissappointing. Eva Green was a tad wooden for me to care, like she was meant to be complex and evil, but she was unable to handle both complexities. Maybe she was grasping at straws, since the direction seemed to be all over the place.
Joseph Fiennes...oh dear. We get another version of his 'Anxious, panicky, sweaty guy' which is his go to acting method that he seems to do in everything when he's not playing the calm, straight guy. And again, he doesn't do it very well. Merlin was meant to be this methodical type of guy, thinking about the next decision before it happens, even if he is unable to figure out the outcome. But this guy was just an idiot, who was often more clueless than Arthur. How are we meant to root for these losers?
A number of the other actors and actresses were pretty bad too. Guinivere was boring and dull. Arthur, I wanted to like, but again, he was too groomed and primped to be believable.
Talented actors and actresses who have done well in other things were literally wasted here.
And there was no real drama. As others have noted, the central storyline was two siblings (Arthur and Morgana) fighting each other over what is their heritage. One is reluctant to do so, yet realises it is their destiny. The other is power hungry, yet would squander that power if they were to gain it.
It's not that hard to do right. Dallas did it for years with JR and Bobby.

The biggest problem this show had was that it started around the same time that Game of Trones started.

reply

I know! If only there was technology that allowed people who were already spending way too much money a month for both HBO and Starz to be able to see both at their leisure!!!!!!

Oh wait, I think we both forgot about DVRs! Hmmm, any other brilliant insight into this shows cancellation?

EDIT

reply

It was a pretty good show. Loved Eva Green and her evil nun side kick. Wish they had at least produced a movie or mini series to tie everything up. Starz sucks big time.

reply

Absolutely needs a tie up!I can't believe it just ends with Morgan in the hall walking away from Arthur's bedroom and the tv voice TELLS us what is coming in the NEXT episode...which is...where?

reply

I met Clive Standen yesterday at a convention and asked him about the show. He said they cancelled it because Eva Green did a Tim Burton movie and by the time she finally got time for Camelot, most of the other actors had already turned to other work.
