Where exactly in the U.S are they supposed to be?
I know the filming location was in Canada, but they kept talking about being close to the border, where are they supposed to be?

US 131 as viewed in the movie is on the western side of the LP of Michigan. Mt Pleasant is east of US 131. I75 runs up the eastern part of the LP and in the northernmost part runs near and east US 131. When one says they live close to the border of Canada, it suggests you live in a very rural place with the border near your land walkable or not walkable. From this criminal's point of view, he is looking for a walkable entrance into Canada. Michigan is surrounded by the Great Lakes which you cannot walk across, dah! Minnesota on West and Eastern New York on East appear to have possible walkable access of this nature (no waterways) unlike Michigan and Ohio. You can maybe boat across the St Marys River in Sault Ste Marie (the UP) 50 or so miles from a home near northern US 131. This is NOT a walkable distance ignoring the need for a boat. This is not a geographically accurate movie.
