The state police car that showed up after the crash early in the movie had a Michigan State Police emblem on the door, and the sheriff's shoulder patch had an outline of Michigan, but no county name. The MSP card was faked because it had a light bar on the roof. MSP cars have had a single bubble light since Custer was a corporal.

I guess we'll never know. When they said Bear Lake, near the border, I immediatly thought of Utah/Idaho, as bear lake is one the border of those states.

I have no answers but I can tell you the whole movie
was shot in about 3 square miles!

In a sugar shak, no less.

Quite funny to see hiking trails I use often!

Movie making for ya!

What's a sugar shak?

The story takes place in Michigan. The boxer/son is released from a Wayne county jail. Someone from the Detroit police department calls the (unnamed) county Sheriff's office. A road sign identifies the highway as Michigan 131.

Unfortunately, the story's main premise is geographically challenged. The only way to cross into Canada from Michigan is over a bridge (from Detroit, Port Huron, or at Sault Sainte Marie).

reply

I would say New Mexico.

Mount Pleasant, Michigan. There is a big casino in Mt. Pleasant. Search on Google maps.

synopsis
In the wake of a botched heist in Mount Pleasant, MI, sibling casino robbers Addison (Eric Bana) and Liza (Olivia Wilde) are making a mad dash for the Canadian border when their car careens off the icy road, and their getaway driver is instantly killed. After a policeman stumbles across the accident scene moments later, Addison impulsively pumps him full of bullets, gives half of the cash to Liza, and insists that the pair split up.

I live right next to Mt. Pleasant, MI and this film was definatly not filmed here or anywhere near here. Plus theres no way in hell you could try to rob a casino in Mt.Pleasant, MI which only one is ran by the indians and make it to canada lol. story line would have been better off in the upper peninsula. so right away i was turned off of this movie cause of its poor thought out setting. At first i was curious to see it till i read about it more. bah epic fail for a stellar cast.

reply

Nobody said it was filmed in Michigan, they were asking where it was supposed to take place. This was all filmed in Quebec, near Montreal. I was living in Montreal at the time and I met Charlie Hunnam when he was up there filming, he was telling me about the movie. My co-workers had met Eric Bana and Olivia Wilde around the same time. It was being filmed right after season 3 of Sons of Anarchy had ended because Charlie and I were talking about Sons as well, and about why he cut his hair.

reply

Are there lots of places in New Mexico where one can cross into Canada?

reply

It's Wayne County and Detroit. Detroit is like 30 miles from the Canadian border.

reply

lol Detroit is like zero miles from the Canadian border. And you travel SE to get into Canada.

reply

Unbelievable that you would think this was set in New Mexico. Clearly Arizona.

reply

Definitely Michigan. Not sure where the family's house is, but I wouldn't have guessed the UP.

reply

It takes place in Northern Michigan or just over the bridge. Hanna makes the comment when she first visits Jays parents that a Casino to the south of us was robbed (in Mount Pleasant, which could only be Soaring Eagle, in real life) however when Liza leaves her brother the voice mail she gives the Address and states Bear Lake. Bear Lake is in Northern Michigan, south of Traverse City and just off of Lake Michigan. Which is obviously not even close to the Canadian border.

Like most movies, little care is taken in geographical awareness.

reply

There is also an underwater tunnel in Detroit although that does not negate your post regarding the highways.

reply

Detroit is directly on the border with Canada (not 30 miles away), but Sault Saint Marie would be a more optimum crossing point for Soaring Eagle casino robbers. (Less border patrol)

Another thought, even though it looks WAY too cold in this movie to be Thanksgiving weekend (even for northern MI), once the narrow parts of the lakes and rivers freeze, the potential crossing points into Canada become limitless.

reply

Why thanks folks. On the basis of I know not what, I thought it was N Dakota.

There are 4 different Bear Lakes in Michigan that I am aware of, there maybe more. There is one near Manistee, one in North Muskegon, one down in the Portage area, and one in the Upper Peninsula which I assume is the one they are referring to in the movie. When they mentioned the casino in Mount Pleasant, they referred to it as being South. So this is the only one of the Bear Lakes that makes sense. Also being able to cross over into Canada would make sense as you can only do that being in the Upper Peninsula if you are north of Mount Pleaseant. Highway 75 also runs all the way through the state and through the UP. The only discrepancy I can see so far, is one poster mentioned him picking up the girl on Highway 131, which is NOT in the UP. I ran the movie back through Netflix and could not find this part, so if anyone know exactly where the sign is shows for 131, I would appreciate it.

But yea, it is supposed to be the Upper Peninsula in Michigan.

reply

The 131 sign shows up when shes wakling on the side of the road in her dress and he picks her up. 10-15 minutes into the movie.
