I thought it was beautiful and I've seen it 4 times. It keeps getting better. I've read that many complain that it's so bleak, but that's the point. And there are moments that aren't bleak, where desperate men are out only for themselves such as scene with the helpful Indian, the scene where the boy gives food to the Indian woman in the shattered village, etc.
I love this film.
There seems to be no middle ground on this one. You either love it, or hate it. Strange. Why is that I wonder?
Edit: Weeks after posting this question, I've come to the conclusion that IMDB forums are full of a few thoughtful people and a bunch of goofballs. There are a lot of really nasty and childish comments here. For those who actually thought about their answers - thank you. But I won't waste any more time here. I'll discuss movies with friends over a few beers.
It's way, way, WAY too long, I could hardly understand what the soldiers were saying, the plot is all over the place(one moment the 2 guys are walking endlessly then suddenly they appear riding 2 horses, where did they get them from??) Extremely disappointing, 1 out of 4 stars at the most
Wow, I didn't notice any of that. Bear in mind, I'm a primitive hiker, so this was more of a documentary to me, so maybe that's why I loved it so much.
I loved this movie, one of the things I loved about it was that it was long (I love long movies, not sure why), so I could have done with another half hour or so and been perfectly fine.
(one moment the 2 guys are walking endlessly then suddenly they appear riding 2 horses, where did they get them from??)
I'm pretty sure they got those horses from the French camp (I think it was a French camp, it's been a while since I've seen it).

You must be a very simple minded person. I suggest you keep watching Transformers and other "gems" from Hollywood. For once we got a proper big budget cinema in theaters instead of all that superhero crap having the same old tired plot every time with just a bit better FX.
It's the kind of bad film that a small group of Kool-Aid guzzlers like to convince themselves they're smart and eclectic for enjoying it. It's the worst kind of bad film Coppola had feared making his entire career. A pretentious film.
You want smart cinema watch Apocalypse Now. You want a film that thinks it's smart cinema, watch The Revenant.
Officially Canadian for 27 years. Never heard "aboot."
I thought the script was stupid. Not believable, exaggerated, purposefully and gratuitously violent and gory, stereotypically PC in its depiction of the "savage" whites and "noble", "enlightened" Indians. I thought it didn't work as a drama at all, I thought it lacked any kind of substance. The visuals are the only positive thing about it, but that's a given with a Lubezki film.
It's a very sick movie, liked by sick people. If I go to see a movie, I want something nice. To see pain, cruelty, abuse, treachery, etc, I don't need the theater. You find it in everyday's life. Oh, I know the kind of guys who love it, because they are tough, and boys will be boys. Most of them are younger than 25, and may not even like it if not for their buddies... You must pay your tribute to what? virility? Is it that bad to be a man today that you must behave like a sociopath? What is beautiful in death and pain? Where is the glory to know your pals will betray you? It is horrible that America has fallen that low. Yes, I agree, on the top of the rest, the story is stupid and does not make sense.
Revenant aside, I thought 2015 was a really awful year for high quality films. I've watched almost all of the Oscar nominated ones, and I hated or was left indifferent by most of them. The only movie I rated above 8 was Brooklyn. 2014 had a lot better films (Inherent Vice, Nightcrawler, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Whiplash, Foxcatcher). 2015 was just dire, and The Revenant, Mad Max, The Hateful Eight and Star Wars were the worst of the bunch. All the praise and worship these movies received make me feel very estranged from humanity.
The world is equal parts beautiful and ugly--natural and humanity. Ignoring one because it bothers you is a really sad and narrow way of looking the world. To appreciate beauty you must also see the ugly. To appreciate nature you must look at it in it's entirety.
"Hated it!" - Many explanations for about 85% of those who hated it: 1) IMDB Fanboys trained / indoctrinated solely by Hollywood in movies and moviemaking - they play right into their hands; 2) Like deeply-insecure pre-teenagers, this type will ALWAYS use Superlatives and extreme language improperly, will exaggerate and over-exaggerate without knowing what they are even talking about "Worst I have seen in my entire life!" "Literally the worst 2 1/2 hours ever!" blah blah blah... LOOK UP the word "Superlative"; learn how to write properly!
The list goes on and on - we all know the type ( good example, they talk about "Cinematography" without even knowing what the word actually means, without knowing the true pioneers in the business; without much of any knowledge at all (Knowledge being far different than mere "Information", etc.)
MOST of these Fanboy types do not realize how ridiculous they even sound - their No. 1 Whining Complaint about any movie is "Boring!" - OK, Does this mean that their daily Lives are truly more exciting and interesting than such movies?
When they stop talking like pre-teenage, deeply insecure types, start using the English Language LITERALLY and can truly say that their own lives are far more Exciting than these movies (and prove it), then we will listen. Until then?
Nobody with half a brain takes them seriously - as if a movie like this can be admired by thousands and thousands of people with actual Educations in the field are ALL wrong; and they are the only ones who are Right? Um...
PS - they all hate like poison any kind of accurate criticism - which makes it easy to push their little buttons; just sound a little pretentious and assert a superior education and intellect - that drives them crazy! Has it worked just now?
