Cheesiest movie ever

So corny and cliché, 8,1? Seriously?
My favorite part was when they don't know "Heroes"- so bad, all the music references in this movie are lame, too embarrassing to watch.

I have to agree. I enjoyed the book, but it had a pretty big cheese factor too. It was still enjoyable even with the author trying way too hard. The movie on the other hand...I'm not sure. There were some really good parts but the way in which the characters interacted with each other was just silly.

I actually came on imdb to see what score it had, and it floored me when I saw 8.1. To me it felt like a 5 at best, it felt corny, most of the "clever dialogue" felt so untrue to how actual high schoolers are, even the more intellectually inclined, "quirky" ones. Maybe you have to be in high school to appreciate the movie, but this one was a miss *for me*.

Maybe you should watch " Fast Times at Ridgemont High" then. Maybe you will find that movie more to your liking, even though it represents " cheesy" to it's max compared to Perks.

reply

And maybe you should stop sounding so condescending. I'm truly sorry I didn't love this movie, I get it-you love it. You should get used to the fact not everyone's gonna like all the same stuff you like, it's the internet.

And by the way, I have watched "Fast Times..." and while it's not a masterpiece and didn't really capture high school all that accurately for me either (maybe it's the era) at least it wasn't cringe-worthy, pretentious BS with quirky, hipsterish, fast-talking, mega-witty teenagers and had a few laughs (even if cheap).

For you or anyone else that thinks this didnt capture high school life, you, must have had a TERRIFIC high school life. Now, this doesnt portray the TYPICAL loner's high school life, but it sure as hell portrayed mine. Now, i wasnt sexually abused in my life, but when i was in high school and to this day, i suffer from severe panic and anxiety disorder, i was shy and introverted. Theres a difference between opinion and just plain wrong. Your opinion is that you dont like the movie, and anyone who doesnt, thats fine. But to say this holds none to almost no truth about the high school life of someone like that, you are just wrong and should F- off because thats incredibly ignorant.

reply

Yeah, everyone whose opinion doesn't match yours should just *beep* off with their opinions and they are ignorant and wrong for not agreeing with you. Classic. If you ever need help getting that stick out of your ass, call me. On second thought, don't.

I don't think it portrayed that age group accurately...
Let's toast for Charlie being our friend - just too much.

In other words it was pretentious.

As for "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"; that is imo superior film but completely different genre, a teenage comedy. This was no comedy.

If you want to compare something a bit closer to genre of "Perks" then my pick would be "The Breakfast Club" which imo is far best in its genre. I have previously criticized it, too, for being somewhat unrealistic about maturity of the discussions those characters have towards the end of the film or how they open up completely. But still, I've rated it a 10/10...

"Perks" felt a bit more unrealistic but wasn't bad though... I thought first half of the film was pretty slow but improved towards the end. I have to say I liked the actors and characters in "The Breakfast Club" a lot more. Both films had some depth of dialogue.

I think I'll rate "Perks" a 6/10, which means ok in my rating system.

I found it a bit amusing that apparently they didn't recognize David Bowie's voice which is quite distinct. Damn hipsters. :)

reply

can definitely agree. "in the moment we were infinite". i want to puke, that line is so cheesetastic and cringe

reply

I have to agree - I just switched off halfway through, realising I wasn't go to enjoy the rest - and if i was searching for a word to describe my problem with it, 'cheesy' is pretty much spot on. Maybe it's aimed at much younger people than me. A lot of them love some cheese without realising how cheesy the cheese they are enjoying is.

reply

Having lived in Pittsburgh and being roughly the same age as the characters, I've never heard any David Bowie songs played on the radio here. Pittsburgh is more of a Molly Hatchet or Lynyrd Skynyrd type of town.

reply

Well then that makes perfect sense. The fact that they couldn't find the song after the characters heard it seemed odd to me,as I knew that song the second it started playing, but if it wasn't "the norm" for music being played then it would have been difficult for them to know/find it.
Thanks, you made the movie even better for me! :)

Give me a high school movie that doesn't have the same stock characters (jocks, movie theatre cliques, etc.), glorified out-of-school activities, typical teen romance, and typical party scenes and I will call it a masterpiece.

Until then, this movie was pretty cheesy. Definitely not worth the 8+ score

Not because it wasn't enjoyable: I enjoyed it, had a bit of a surprise at the end, and felt kinda emotional around certain parts.

But it was formulaic, and uninspiring. It tried. Characters kinda appeared and then disappeared.

It didn't have that extra touch that usually accompanies high-rated films. That magic which makes the viewer think at the end, "Wow, I just watched something that I have never seen before".

Btw where I live high schoolers don't clique out like this, most of the time they are pretty mixed up. A high school movie doesn't need these black and white definitions.

reply

Dazed And Confused has all the typical high school characters you listed but is great and not cheesy at all.

reply

Well, I really did not like this film - it just felt so cliched and nothing in it rang true. One of the few films I've tried to watch and had to turn off halfway through because I just did not like it at all.

Oh, and I am outside the US.

" nothing in it rang true" .
How do you know that? you admit you barely watched half of the film. The final half of the film had some of the most hard hitting emotional connection scenes. It's Like saying a restaurant has horrible tasting desserts , when you walked out halfway through eating the main course and never had dessert.

reply

Well, maybe, though I would say I probably watched a bit more than half - the trouble was I didn't like any of it, none of the scenes, so I suppose the only way I could have liked the last bit was if the film changes completely. It had already lost me though so too late really.

It just seems to me that this film provokes quite strong reactions in people - some love it, some really do not like it. I wanted to like it and am a big fan of coming of age type films, but this one just did nothing for me.

reply

Normally i agree but this wasnt that cheesy. Some moments sure but, nah, not that cheesy.

reply

I agree. Really, really cringeworthy.

I especially hate those "omg, you'll love my taste in music, it's so obscure" types. Gaaaah!

I agree. While it was a bit corny and most definitely cliched. I think not an 8/10, I'd give it a 6. I didn't really like it. It wasn't magical. I didn't really like the characters or care for them. There were some funny parts but more like laugh-through-your-nose kind of funny. Idk, I don't really like these types of movies. Too hipster or maybe too high school-ish for me, lol.

Mmm, this capon taste like chicken.
Capon is chicken.
