Scarlett Johansson is the obvious choice but actresses such as Michelle Williams, Elisha Cuthbert, Amber Heard, even Katherine Heigl all have certain similarities too.
But I don't think anyone would be able to give a 100% convincing look and performance.
Ashmi any question
I know current actresses are being mentioning, but take us back to 1980 or so, Deborah Harry (Blondie) had that innocent, yet very sexy look. I think the casting of Michelle Williams is fine.
shareFunny how nearly everyone suggests a blonde, as if that somehow is halfway there... considering that Marilyn herself was a natural brunette. I image-googled "actresses who look like Marilyn Monroe" and most of what came up were pictures of people who had similar hairstyles but looked nothing like her.
Reminds me of when Richard Harris died and a new Dumbledore had to be cast. Everyone said "Ian McKellen!". Why, because they know him as another wizard with a long beard. I suggested Michael Gambon and was laughed off the board... then he ended up being the one who got cast.
I'm sure if someone were to make a biopic about Kojak, the top 10 suggestions for casting would be other bald actors who look nothing like him, face wise. But, see, you don't cast by hair, it's the very simplest thing to change in make-up.
Anyway... My choice, a brunette, would be... Kate Beckinsale. Why?
Well, let's start with this pic:

Face shape good, mouth good, nose near perfect match. Eyes - brown, unfortunately, but then there's lenses (or CG if all else fails) plus the fact that many people think Marilyn had brown eyes - this is because they were dark blue, and also she had this trademark thing with her eyelids half-closed, so her eyes looked darker than they were. Kate's eyes aren't quite set as far apart as Marilyn's, but the makeup department could alleviate that a bit. They also have the right 'sad puppy' slant which is a good start... Cuthbert's peepers lean the other way... the cat angle.
Here's a Monroe/Beckinsale morph: http://www.morphthing.com/showimage/2/0/0/7032/Kate-Beckinsale-and-Marilyn-Monroe.jpeg
As much as we all love to keep seeing Elisha in a recurring sex kitten role, no, she doesnt have the chops to play Naomi Watts let alone Marilyn. A remake of Beach Blanket Babylon and playing a bimbo yes, playing Marilyn no.
Naomi would do well, shes a pro but too old but perhaps like Scarlett would love to see both of them get to take a swing at this. By far, wide and over hill & dale Michelle was the perfect choice for this romanticized story, she knocked it out of the park, it was delightful.
What is true, Marilyn was at the height of fame in 1956 with Some Like it Hot & Prince/Showgirl at 30yrs old, 6yrs later in 1962 she was dead, tragic Hollywood ending. Even if only half true any normal person would love to believe she had some small magical moments like this, before the run into her fall.
So morons, please GFY... Michelle was it.

KATE UPTON.
shareShe's a little older now, but Charlize Theron would do wonderfully if she added a bit of weight.
A younger actor I've in mind would be Kate Upton. She's a little tall, but she's got the right shape and facial features. Not sure about ability, but to me she looks the part.
