OH,please---I just saw the film, and it was actually pretty decent---the New York Post is just a tabloid that I've never read a movie review from anyway. I wouldn't put too much stock in what they say. It was fun, suspenseful and exciting, and frankly, I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel, since the ending is kind of left open for one. And it was cool as hell seeing Idris Elba take the lead as the enigmatic, sharpshooting anti-hero---he pretty much owns the film, almost by just showing up and glowering at people, lol. I do wish the film had been a little longer, and I also wish it had been R-rated (but it's still pretty violent for a PG-13 flick) and I did like the unique blend of genres in the film---even though they're clearly nothing new, and have been done many times before, it didn't feel like the same old tired redone drivel I'd seen before, which was good. I've never read the books, so I could care less about how faithful it is to the story---I just enjoyed most of it as some good-old fashioned entertainment. It just came out, so give it a minute to breathe and let other folks make up their minds about it. Plus Matthew McConaughey was cool and vicious as hell as the bad guy---he just seems to be a far interesting (and much better) actor when he plays bad guys, or simply morally questionable dudes, lol.

I would submit that it was a great movie assuming the person watching has no familiarity with the books at all.

reply

Yes, I agree. Just got back from seeing it. I thought it was a disappointment even after expecting the worst. My husband who has not read any of the books actually said he thought it was a good movie.

reply

I think calling this great is an exaggeration but I agree somewhat with what you are saying. I couldn't get into the books (only read The Gunslinger and struggled to get through it) and I found this movie enjoyable. To me though, this felt more like a Harry Potter spinoff than something adapted from Stephen King's signature series. It's PG-13

reply

Calling it great, even with a qualifier, might have been a little optimistic.

I have NO familiarity with the source material. I liked the movie very much.
To ME, a movie should stand on its own merits.
Some have commented that a person who hasn't read the books will not understand the movie. While I am not going to say that EVERYTHING was crystal clear to me, I was able to grasp the theme of the movie enough that I was not LOST.
Tee movie kept my interest from beginning to end. I enjoyed the acting. Matthew was a very unique menacing character in the movie.
I am recommending this to a few friends who I think might like it.

reply

Thanks...it's getting panned by RT. You give me hope.

reply

As long as you have no connection to the books you should like it.

As a stand-alone movie it is pretty good. Elba is brilliant.
If you are a reader of the books be prepared to see a movie that you would not recognize at all if it were not for the title and the character & place-names.

Beware.

reply

Matthew as a villain - Have you seen Killer Joe? Great movie.

reply

Frogarama:

I didn't think Killer Joe was a great movie----it's a good one, but some of it was too disturbing and in one case, too flat-out nasty for me (that scene with Gina Gershon's character in the end---I couldn't even look at that. I thought it was just to damn disgusting to watch.) That being said, I've seen McConaughey as a sleazy attorney in The Lincoln Lawyer, a cowboy with AIDS in The Dallas Buyer's Club,a strip club mentor in Magic Mike, and I need to check out a drama he did called MUD, in which he plays a guy who may or may not be a criminal. So,yeah, I've seen him play a number of villains, and I've just found him more interesting to watch when he channels that naturally laid-back Southern charisma of his into morally questionable characters----I was never interested in anything he did before that.

Looks like you are one of a handful of people that thought it was even "pretty decent". Audiences and critics hated it and it is a HUGE flop. Everyone (but you) agrees Elba was horribly miscast and was one of the worst things in a dreadful movie. His string of flops continues and you have to wonder how much longer he will be gifted roles he obviously doesn't have the talent to handle.

reply

Elba was easily the high point of this otherwise incoherent mess of a film, and the only thing keeping me at all engaged in the story.

reply

Sure he was. Did he do Stringer Bell or Luther? The difference being one of them has a definite Brit accent and the other only lapses into a Brit accent at times. Pull your tongue from his butt now and pat yourself on the back for your repeated hyperbolic praise of Elba on this board.

reply

Damn, did Idris Elba run over your puppy or something?

The man has done some bad movies, but he's never handed in a bad performance.

reply

He tried to take over some of my corners. That's why he had to run away to Hollywood yo
